Service Learning Day and
Red Cross Blood Drive - April 27

On April 27, the entire school community (students, faculty and staff) will join together to engage in a day of service learning. Many of us will stay on campus; others will travel to sites around greater New Haven. Students and faculty chaperones will participate in activities ranging from environmental cleanup and food pantry deliveries, to visiting animal shelters and knitting hats for cancer patients. As part of the day, we will be hosting a Red Cross blood drive for adults 17 and older, from 12:15 to 5:15 p.m. in the gym. More information is on the flyer below.

Placement Decisions for Next Year

For parents of Grades K-4:

In the coming month, we will begin making sections, or classes, for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have information about your child that you think will support us in our efforts to create these sections, please contact Head of Lower School Beth Mello directly (203-777-3464, bmello@footeschool.org). While we are not able to meet every specific request or insight, we can certainly use the information you provide to inform our process.

If you'd like to meet with Beth Mello, please schedule an appointment through Erika Villa (evilla@footeschool.org).

This event is sponsored by the PTC and supported entirely by Foote parents who provide breakfast items and flowers and plants for our annual flower raffle. Please consider donating to this enjoyable event. Click here to sign up to bring food, flowers or both. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Non-perishable items can be dropped off in the Twichell Room on Monday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 16, clearly labeled "Faculty Breakfast." Close-Up:
Seeing the Light in 5th Grade Science

How does the eye collect light and transmit that information to the brain? What does the optic nerve do? What about the lens, the retina and the tapetum? Fifth graders investigated those questions in science class this week by dissecting a cow's eye, part of a broader study of light optics and color theory. Weighty concepts for 10- and 11-year-olds, but the students tackled the project with seriousness and curiosity, working in pairs or small groups to complete the challenging activity.

Under the guidance of Associate Teacher Andrew Zielinski and Science Co-Chair John Cunningham, the students cut a cross-section to reveal the inner workings of the eye, identifying the component parts and the role each one plays. "Did everybody find the cornea?" Mr. Cunningham called to the class. "We did, but our cornea looks dead," one student replied.

"That's because these are preserved specimens. How would it appear in a fresh one?" Mr. Cunningham queried.

The student thought for a moment before replying correctly, "Clear, fresh and bulging."

The project is, for many students, their first experience with a dissection, a process that is repeated and expanded upon in Middle School science. The exposure gives students a hands-on chance to explore anatomy and a valuable opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine or the sciences.

"I bet one or more of you will go on to be doctors," said Mr. Cunningham. "Maybe even surgeons."
