A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Close-Up: Examining Forced Migration, Piece by Piece
One of the essential questions guiding our fourth grade social studies curriculum is "Why do people come to the United States?" Fourth graders learn that people immigrate by choice to seek new opportunities, or to escape difficult situations.
This year, the fourth grade teachers decided a third reason needed to be addressed: forced migration. Teachers Denise Quinn, John Climie and Toby Welch have crafted a unit of study that teaches our 9- and 10-year-olds about slavery in an age-appropriate way, drawing on books, maps, songs and documentary films.
Students are reading three different books that address the slave experience and working in small groups to illustrate parts of the book and stitch their images into a quilt, in the tradition of "quilt codes" that were created by enslaved people.
