Collecting 'Valentines' for the Homeless

Margy Lamere's first graders counting the gift cards

As of last count, the Lower School had collected more than 300 gift cards to Subway and Dunkin' Donuts for homeless guests at Columbus House shelters! The Valentine's Day collection drive has been a tradition in Margy Lamere and Hilary Pearson's classrooms for years, and this year was expanded to the entire Lower School. The gift cards are important because they allow homeless individuals to get a warm drink or bite to eat inside during the cold winter months. Thanks to all Lower School families for supporting this important service-learning project!

Close-Up:
Why Make Lemonade When You Can
Make a Float?

A beaming Kindergartner approached Angela Giannella at the beginning of French class today, proudly handing the teacher three clementines. "Oh, merci!" Madame exclaimed. "These can be the first ones to hang on the float." After leading the class out into the hallway, Angela helped the student attach the fruit to a wood-and-wire replica of the Eiffel Tower.

If the significance of this activity is unclear to you, don't worry; the Lower School French students can explain. There is a holiday underway in the South of France, and Foote School is doing its part to join the celebration. Last Saturday, while the good people of New Haven were shoveling out from last week's snowstorm, the 84th annual Fête du Citron began on the French Riviera, when floats and statues made from citrus fruits are paraded through town as part of a three-week celebration.

In addition to the cultural knowledge they gain, the project about the Fête provides an ideal opportunity for children to reinforce the names of colors and fruits. "It's not vertttt," says one student, explaining the pronunciation of the French word for green. "It's verrrr."
