Wear Special Colors for Tomorrow's MLK Assembly

An all-school assembly will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, January 27 in the Hosley Gym.

To tie into the themes of inclusiveness and community, we are asking each grade to come dressed in a specific color so that together we make a giant rainbow on the gym floor. This is not assembly dress.

Students have been assigned the following colors:
  • Kindergarten & Grade 9 - Red
  • Grades 1 & 7 - Orange
  • Grade 2 - Yellow
  • Grades 3 & 5 - Green
  • Grades 4 & 6 - Blue
  • Grade 8 - White, as directed by their teachers
  • Faculty & Staff - Purple, Maroon or Pink
Please note: This is an assembly for students and faculty.

Basketball Fundraiser Was a Slam Dunk!

Thanks to everyone who supported the PTC's Basketball for Foote fundraiser last week. The clinic was well attended by students from the Lower and Middle School, including many of Foote's own basketball players.

Coach James Jones was dynamic and inspiring! He led a clinic focused on shooting and filled his instruction with humor and fun stories. The players from the Yale men's and women's teams worked with kids to hone their skills and demonstrated some of their own. We were joined by students from Horizons at Foote, the school's summer program for low-income New Haven public school students. Pizza, cookies and crafts were enjoyed by all, making for a memorable community event!

Special thanks to Coach Jones and the Yale players for volunteering their time and talents!

Gears Are Turning in 3rd Grade STEM Class

Third graders have been happily engaged in a robotics program as part of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum. In Leslie Long's science lab, pairs of students are working with Lego WeDo kits, building a variety of whimsical, wonderful, motorized devices. Once their constructions are assembled, the students connect them to a laptop and program instructions for each robotic action by choosing, and sequencing, icons from the WeDo menu.

The technology is an outgrowth of a programming system created in the 1980s by Seymour Papert, a pioneer in technology education who understood that children's exploration with familiar materials led to a deeper understanding of essential scientific and mathematical principles.

Around Ms. Long's room, children demonstrated Papert's pedagogy by building devices and creating sequences on the computer to animate them. They engaged in a logical process of trial and error, tweaking and adjusting their programs to produce desired results.
