Close-Up:
'Setting the Scene' in 8th Grade History

This week at Foote, author David McCullough is serving in the role of master teacher in eighth grade U.S. History classes. Or rather, his first book, The Johnstown Flood, is. Students in Lauren Goldberg and Liam Considine's classes are using the book, about the catastrophe of an 1889 dam collapse in Pennsylvania, as a 'mentor text' to explore how great authors use the techniques of a fiction writer -- suspense, detail and complex characters -- to bring historical events to life. Along the way, Lauren says, students come to see history as a series of human stories that can be told from multiple perspectives.

Winter Assembly Hits a High Note

The annual Winter Assembly showcased the depth and breadth of Foote's music program with festive songs and memorable performances by students on steel pans, handbells and the newest ensemble, World Drumming. Foote also bade farewell to this year's Chinese guest teacher from Yali, Fu Yingfei, who spent the last four months teaching and learning with every grade at Foote.
