Our $100,000 Challenge Grant will again match all new and increased gifts to the Foote Fund received during the first 100 days of school (before February 16, 2017). Please Give to the Thanksgiving Food Drive
The sixth grade is coordinating a school-wide Thanksgiving food drive for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Hamden.
We are asking each grade to collect a specific item by Nov. 17 to help fill 200 bags with fixings for a Thanksgiving Day meal. We are also raising money to purchase 25 turkeys. That collection box will be in the main office.
Your donations will help ensure that our neighbors in need have a great Thanksgiving. Thank you!

| Book Discussion Rescheduled to Dec. 7 |
Over the summer, the entire Foote faculty and staff read Whistling Vivaldi by social psychologist Claude Steele as professional development. The book "sheds new light on how pervasive stereotypes can actually influence behavior and performance and how these stereotypes, if left unexamined, perpetuate themselves." We are using the book this year in our ongoing efforts to achieve an inclusive, supportive, nurturing environment for children, families and teachers. (Read more about our efforts on our Curriculum Conversations blog).
In June, we invited parents to read the book along with us. We will host a diversity and book discussion on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8:30 a.m. in the Sturley Room as part of our monthly PTC meeting. All parents are welcome. Curriculum Coordinator Lauren Goldberg, school counselor Kossouth Bradford and Head of Lower School Beth Mello will facilitate the discussion. Please do not feel you need to read the book in its entirety to participate. Should you wish to read the book, several copies are available for checkout in the Perrine Library.

Winter Sports Begin Nov. 28
A Note from Athletics Director Brad McGuire:
Winter sports will begin on Monday, Nov. 28. Our first day will consist of a whole group meeting, individual team meetings, uniform hand-out for basketball and squash teams and uniform fitting/ordering for swim team. All teams will begin practices on the court or in the pool on Tuesday, Nov. 29. I look forward to seeing many of you at our competitions and I am excited to partner with you to help all of our student athletes get the best out of their athletic experience this winter. Each team's schedule will soon be posted on the Foote School website. Keep an eye on the announcement section of the homepage for practices or games that are postponed or canceled. Below you will find a list of equipment needed for each sport this winter.
Boys/Girls Basketball: properly fitting sneakers (basketball sneakers preferred for appropriate ankle support), shorts and t-shirt
Reversible practice jerseys will be handed out with uniforms. If a student would like to order a practice jersey to keep, they can bring in $20 and we will order it. Squash: squash sneakers (no black on the sole of the sneaker), squash racket, protective eye glasses, shorts and t-shirt. Swimming: practice swimsuit, competition swimsuit and towel. Swim cap will be provided. Click here to download the swimsuit order form. All forms should be brought to our opening meeting on 11/28 as there will be a representative from Metro Swim Shop to assist with uniform fitting and ordering.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Close-Up: The Campus is the Curriculum
At Foote, we do our best to balance the use of technology with other methods of sharing information. One location where we have achieved a terrific blend of media, message, village and communication is the screen in the main hall of the Milikowsky Building. Every morning, technology coordinator Tony Bures programs the screen with a new stream of content for our Middle School community. When students and teachers arrive in the morning, most stop for a few minutes to check out the daily update. There are regular features: the weather, the Foote schedule, sports news and a word of the day.
For Election Day, we ran a live stream of CNN all day. The crowd in front of the screen was larger than usual, and students eagerly watched the images of voters at polling places, footage of the candidates casting their ballots, and analysts offering their perspectives. It was an ideal way of acknowledging the national event and allowing our conversations to emerge organically through the day.

Giving Voice to Prison Families
The Foote community was treated to an eye-opening presentation on Nov. 7 at an evening talk sponsored by MOSAIC (Multicultural, Open-Minded, Supportive, Accepting, Inclusive Community). Radio producer Sylvia Ryerson gave a moving talk about her work creating audio postcards with families of prisoners to broadcast over the airwaves to the inmates inside. Sylvia talked about the origins of "Restorative Radio," as her project is called, and about the hardships endured by families whose loved ones are imprisoned in remote regions of Appalachia, far from their home communities. For Restorative Radio, Sylvia followed families through their daily lives, capturing the sounds of home, church, family dinners and messages from parents, siblings, spouses and children. Each piece was broadcast several times on community radio station WMMT in Whitesburg, KY. For inmates listening inside the super-max federal prisons, the broadcast offered a vital connection to loved ones back home. Click here to listen to a sample episode of Restorative Radio. |
