A Message From the
Head of School

Dear Families,

I wanted to take a moment and share some information about how we're handling this year's presidential campaign in our classrooms. As we all know, children pick up on things in the news, and the coarsening of our political dialogue this election season has led to some unexpected conversations and questions. We have done our best to view these as opportunities for learning and greater understanding, while reinforcing Foote's core values as an inclusive community that celebrates diversity.

In the Lower School, in partnership with classroom teachers, Beth Mello has been facilitating developmentally appropriate conversations about what it means to live in a democracy and express different viewpoints respectfully. The Middle School has approached the election from various perspectives: sixth graders learned about the electoral process, while eighth graders study elections (past and present), as well as presidential platforms, as part of their U.S. history curriculum. Teachers have used our community expectations to guide discussions about the campaign, reinforcing the respectful sharing of ideas as we approach this historic election.

Warmly,
CarolM signature

Shelter Drill Next Week

As part of our regular safety and security procedures, we will conduct a shelter drill next week. We refer to this planned exercise as a "shelter drill," as we use the term "lock down" to connote an actual emergency.

Teachers will review procedures with students in advance of the drill. Past shelter drills have gone very smoothly, with students responding in a calm and orderly manner.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Head of School Carol Maoz or Business Manager Jay Cox.

Share the Love of Reading: Support Book
Fair Projects

The annual Foote Book Fair is November 15 - 17. It will feature an on-campus book sale, a family ice-cream social, performance by Grammy-winning singer and storyteller Bill Harley and special discounts at R.J. Julia Booksellers.

Please consider sharing the love of reading by supporting these important Book Fair projects. Thank you!

Please Give to the Thanksgiving Food Drive

The sixth grade is coordinating a school-wide Thanksgiving food drive for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Hamden.

We are asking each grade to collect a specific item by Nov. 17 to help fill 200 bags with fixings for a Thanksgiving Day meal. We are also raising money to purchase 25 turkeys. That collection box will be in the main office.

Your donations will help ensure that our neighbors in need have a great Thanksgiving. Thank you!

Halloween Parade and Fair Photos

What a fantastic Halloween Parade and Fair! The costumes were so creative and spirits were high, despite the blustery cold. Thanks to everyone's help and support, we had a wonderful celebration and were able to raise needed funds for Columbus House to support homeless families in Connecticut.

Close-Up: Learning Language and Tradition on Dia de los Muertos

Teaching and learning in the Language Arts focus on four key areas of literacy: reading, writing, listening and speaking. At Foote, they form the linguistic core of our English courses and also provide a framework for learning modern languages.

This week, eighth grade Spanish classes practiced all four aspects of language as part of a fascinating unit about the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Each student in Sally Nunnally and Hayden Holt's classes chose a person of Latin descent to honor. Students conducted research using Spanish and English source material, prepared Spanish-language biographies and assembled ofrendas, small shrines to celebrate the lives of the honorees.

Students brought their ofrendas to the Twichell Room this week, where they shared their monologues with classmates and responded to questions from classmates and teachers, conversations that were held almost entirely in Spanish.

Engineering Tree Houses, in Miniature
Fifth graders study trees as part of an inter-disciplinary ecology unit. In Karla Matheny's art class, fifth graders designed and built miniature tree houses using branches and basic materials such as popsicle sticks, cardboard and string. The project challenged each student to come up with a unique design that would be structurally secure in their "tree" (the branch). The resulting tree houses were imaginative and whimsical, embellished with rope ladders, furniture, swings and miniature people.

From the Faculty Blogs

As they learn about Connecticut and the three branches of government, third graders visited the state capitol in Hartford (pictured). Amanda Diffley and Ashley Schnabel have photos.

School Counselor Kossouth Bradford has a new podcast about the value of teaching your child "emotional agility."
