A Message from the Head of School

Dear Families,

What an amazing school year! From our opening assembly to Centennial Weekend, Foote's 100th year was truly unforgettable. I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated faculty and to all parents for being such committed partners in your children's education. I also want to thank outgoing PTC co-president Rosa Holler for working tirelessly to strengthen our community over the past two years, and to welcome incoming PTC co-president Melissa Castleman.

This school year, we witnessed each student grow in ways large and small. They approached new challenges with open minds, perseverance, teamwork and a genuine love of learning. It's no exaggeration to say that they make us proud every day.

I hope this summer presents you opportunities to relax and reflect, to get lost in great books and to embark on exciting adventures. More than anything, I hope it affords you ample time for play. Children learn so much through self-directed play, developing creativity, resilience and executive function skills along the way.

Have a wonderful summer, and we'll look forward to welcoming you back to Foote next fall!

Sincerely,
CarolM signature

Summer Reading!

Head Librarian Lynda Johnson recently emailed families with summer reading requirements for each grade. You can find links to those letters, along with lists of great family read-aloud books and other summer reading suggestions, on the Library blog.

Library Summer Hours
Don't forget that the Perrine Library will be open Wednesday mornings between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from June 29 through August 3.

Join the Faculty Summer Read

Each year, the faculty Professional Development Committee selects a book for the entire faculty and staff to read over the summer and discuss at the opening faculty meeting in September. This summer, faculty and staff will read Whistling Vivaldi by Claude M. Steele, a book that "sheds new light on how pervasive stereotypes can actually influence behavior and performance and how these stereotypes, left unexamined, perpetuate themselves." The book is one part of the faculty's ongoing work to enhance Foote's approach to diversity.

This year, we invite parents to read along with us. Several copies are available for checkout in the Perrine Library (which will be open Wednesdays 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from June 29 through August 3).

From the School Nurse's Office

Parents: Please pick up your children's medications from the nurse's office by Wednesday, June 15. Any medications not picked up will be discarded.

Last Call for Lost & Found

Lost and found items have been placed in the Sturley Room for collection. If you are missing anything, please take a moment to stop by and look for your belongings. Items not claimed will be donated to a charity.

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
A Memorable Year Comes to a Close

In the final weeks of school, Foote classrooms were buzzing with the excitement of learning. Here's a scrapbook from the final days of our centennial year, one that will not soon be forgotten.

Madame Giannella treated French students to a special, traditional lunch:
raclette, a French cheese that is melted in a special table-top grill and served with baguette, jambon cru (prosciutto), cornichons, potatoes and other sides.

The whole school gathered for the Yearbook Assembly, enthusiastically poring over the pages and signing each others' copies. The cover of this year's Foote Steps, as the yearbook is known, was designed by third grader Ella C., who won a schoolwide cover-design contest!

The Jazz Rock Band, directed by Max Heath, warmed up the Yearbook Assembly crowd with a lively medley of "Tequila" (reworked as "Arriba") and the Mos Eisley Cantina Band theme from Star Wars.

Maryanne "Nursie" Peterson, who is retiring after 27 years as Foote's school nurse, bade a heartfelt farewell at the Yearbook Assembly, flashing the heart sign to show her love. Music teacher Sarah Heath and receptionist Bette Donahoe, who each dedicated more than 15 years to Foote, are also retiring this year.

After the Yearbook Assembly, everyone gathered around the flagpole to find out which team won Field Day.

Fifth graders spent weeks designing solar ovens from recycled materials in John Cunningham's science class, and went outside on a sunny day to test their creations by melting chocolate for s'mores. One student recorded a temperature of 230 degrees inside her oven!

One innovative group of fifth graders took their oven to the next level, building a solar-powered rotisserie to roast marshmallows!

Kindergartners finished their "crate schools" -- miniature rooms modeled after Foote that were carefully measured and built to scale.

At the final Lower School morning meeting, Chester Sharp's second graders presented their Kindness Chain, a project that started in January. On each link, a student wrote an act of kindness he or she did for someone else, or witnessed one student do for another, and read it aloud in front of classmates.

As part of "Greek Immersion Day," fifth graders performed original (and hilariously entertaining) plays about ancient Greek myths in the Sandine Theater.

Foote's spring sports teams had fantastic seasons - winning some, losing some, learning a lot about sportsmanship and having loads of fun along the way. Click here to read team-by-team season recaps.

Foote students enjoy snack in the 1960s. Milk is still offered every day with snack, in similar containers!

We're celebrating Foote's 100th year by looking back in our archives to remember the people and events that have made Foote a special learning community. Check out the Foote Archives blog to learn more about our school's past.

From the Faculty Blogs
With help from Lower School Technology Coordinator Julianne Ross-Kleinmann, Jess McKinney's Kindergartners made a virtual tour of their favorite places at Foote to help next year's Kindergartners feel at home.

Margy Lamere's second graders transformed their classroom into Narnia, which one enters through the wardrobe, of course (pictured).

Grace Peard's first graders joined Deb Rhoads' second graders for a parade of hand-made Galimotos.
