Summer Book Fair - June 6 & 7

The Summer Book Fair will be held June 6 & 7 in the Perrine Library. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to view the terrific selection of titles chosen by Foote's librarians and to get a head start on purchasing summer reading for children. Rising seventh, eighth and ninth graders can purchase summer reading books at the fair. Students will need to bring cash or check to school.

Parent volunteers are needed to make the Book Fair a success. It's a nice way to spend an hour or two and browse a wonderful selection of books for the summer.

Summer Reading!

A note from Head Librarian Lynda Johnson:

Beginning today (June 2) during their Library time, I am giving each child currently in grades K-5 the Summer Book chosen by the teachers for you and your child to read together over the summer. If your child is entering grades 7, 8 or 9 in the fall, he or she will have a selection of books from which to choose. Either a Middle School Humanities teacher or I will have introduced the Choice Books to those students. The Choice Books will be available in paperback at the Book Fair next Monday and Tuesday in the Library.

Please also be sure to look for an email from the school about Summer Reading. Each family will receive an email outlining the specific Summer Reading requirements for each grade in which they will have a student next year. Happy summer to all!

Spring Food Drive a Big Success!

Thanks to everyone for contributing to our spring food drive for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Hamden. Each grade was responsible for a different item, and we were able to deliver 827 non-perishable food items to fill St. Ann's store room on Thursday. Special thanks to the sixth grade and its advisors for coordinating the school-wide effort!

A Spectacular May Day

What an incredible May Day! The weather was perfect, the spirit was high and the children danced joyfully together. As they have since the 1920s, Foote students gathered to perform traditional country dances for parents, highlighted by the third-grade maypole dance, the ninth-grade sleights sword dance and the Virginia Reel, in which parents join in. Find more photos on our website.

Bargaining in Spanish at a Mock Mercado

Students in Ms. Holt's and Ms. Nunnally's seventh grade Spanish classes simulated bargaining for goods at a mercado al aire libre -- an open-air market. Students enjoyed describing and selling items they brought in from home and the clientes, or customers, enjoyed trying to get the best price possible. They used colones, the Costa Rican currency, to make their purchases and were able to buy galletas de dulce de leche y mango as well as the juices of guayaba and guanbana - two tropical fruits native to Costa Rica. Everyone enjoyed the market very much. It was very chaotic and loud -- just like a real mercado

From the Faculty Blogs

As part of their Africa study, first and second graders in Grace Peard and Deb Rhoads' classes built Galimotos from recycled materials -- and paraded them through campus.

It's gardening season, and Margy Lamere's second graders have been busy in Foote's community garden (pictured).

Check out 5Z, the magazine -- the publication written, edited and designed by Jim Adams' fifth graders.
