Learning Language Through Song

Chinese language students in grades 4 through 7 held a karaoke party for parents and each other this week, performing a range of Chinese songs to demonstrate all they have learned this year. The students spent several class periods learning and practicing the songs with Chinese teachers Lely Evans and Wenyan Witkowsky. Some of the songs included original spoken-word lines to reflect students' learning in class. The performance ended with fifth graders singing Happy 100th Birthday to Foote School.

"It's good for kids to see others who are learning the same language, especially letting the little ones see how the older kids can now do so much more," says Lely. "The older kids are the leaders in the learning process. And really, it's just a fun thing to do, as karaoke is super popular in the Chinese culture. Just about everyone can pick up a mic and sing!"

Click below to watch video from the performances. The songs in order are:
  • Scenery in the Rain (7th Grade)
  • Fruit Song (4th Grade)
  • I am Hungry (4th Grade)
  • Where is the Spring? (5th Grade)
  • The Moon Presents My Heart (6th Grade)
  • Sorry, My Chinese is Not Good (6th Grade)
  • Happy 100th Birthday to Foote School (5th Grade)

Looking Back: The Foote Archives Blog

The Foote School Road Race, which began in 1980 and lasted for several years, raised money for financial aid. The event offered one-mile and 10K courses and
kids' fun run.

We're celebrating Foote's 100th year by looking back in our archives to remember the people and events that have made Foote the special learning community it is. Check out the Foote Archives Blog to learn more about our school's past.

From the Faculty Blogs

Grace Peard's first graders learned about compost, chickens, the phases of seed growth and a plant dance - all in a trip to Yale's sustainable farm.

Margy Lamere's second graders used test tubes to simulate how layers of soil settle.

Third graders made their own didgeridoos for their Australia study and Amanda Diffley shot some video.

Jake Burt's fifth graders learned about linking verbs by forming a human chain -- and, in doing so, earned a sweet prize (pictured).
