A Day to Tinker and Create

The fourth-grade 50 States Fair is next week and to prepare, students participated in a "creativity day" in the Twichell Room on Wednesday. Each student was given a piece of foam board and access to an array of art supplies and recycled materials -- from paper towel tubes to plastic buckets and bicycle wheels -- to build a famous landmark or monument from their assigned state. Grade 4 faculty assisted with hot glue guns, saws and other tools of the trade as students tinkered and engineered their models. The 50-States Fair is an interdisciplinary project that links art, social studies, history and language arts. You can see the students' finished products at the fair, next Wednesday, April 27, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Hosley Gym.

Hatching Chicks, Step One: Choose the Eggs

Kindergartners in Tricia Simon and Lynne Banta's class will be hatching chicks in a classroom incubator as they learn about the life cycle of eggs. This week, the class traveled to a Foote grandparent's house to meet her chickens and pick out fertilized eggs for hatching. The students will carefully observe the eggs while tracking their progress, patiently waiting for the day when they get to meet (and hold) their new feathered friends.
