Book Swap: A Big Thanks to All Who Donated

A heartfelt thank you to the entire Foote community for your tremendous support of the recent Book Drive for Horizons at Foote and the Foote Book Swap.

The combination of these two events led to the largest donation of books in years. Horizons received more than 1,000 books and chits for books, and was able to "shop" at the Swap to select the best age-appropriate titles for its 64 students.

Thanks also to Head of Middle School John Turner, who offered home-baked cookies to any advisory group that brought in 250 books (including at least one from every student). Three groups met this challenge: Trevor Rosenthal and Lely Evans' homeroom; Lara Anderson and Sally Nunnally's homeroom; and Jacqui Fritzinger's advisory group.

Meanwhile, the Book Swap had its best selection in years, and Foote students and families happily shopped for new reading treasures. At the end of the week, leftover books were donated to New Haven Reads. The success of these events was entirely due to the contributions of Foote students and families. Thank you to all who participated.

With gratitude,

Jamie Cole

Maple Sugaring in the Foote Woods

Foote students got a hands-on lesson in maple sugaring on Tuesday during the annual maple sap boil in the Sacred Woods. Using sap collected from Foote's sugar maples, Business Manager Jay Cox and Maintenance staffer Mike Milazzo showed students how clear sap boils down into sweet dark amber syrup.

It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup, and the the 80 gallons boiled down made about two gallons of the sweet stuff. Kindergartners have been learning about the science and cultural tradition of maple
sugaring and observed the sap being collected and boiled down.

On Thursday, they enjoyed the syrup on pancakes they made themselves.
