Hands-On Science: Testing Towels' Toughness

Kindergartners in Jess McKinney's class visited Leslie Long's lab room for a hands-on science experiment testing the strength of paper towels. After making observations and predictions, Ms. Long explained the procedures. Students poured 10 ml of water over a paper towel, then stretched it over a container and gently placed washers in the middle of the wet paper towel to see how many it would hold. Aside from learning about the scientific process, the group discovered that Viva brand towels are tougher than Tuff. Find more photos on the K-1 blog.

Student Video Selected for NYC Film Fest

A short film made by Jim Adams' fifth graders last year has been selected for the 90-Second Newbery film festival in New York City. Each year, Mr. Adams' students create short movies based on Newbery Award-winning books. and enter them in a contest organized by author James Kennedy. Last year's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, by students Jasmine, Jillian and Nick, was selected for a screening at the festival in March. Click the still frame to watch the video.

From the Faculty Blogs

For their Africa unit, Grace Peard's first graders compared a school in Nairobi to Foote - and found many similarities and many differences.

Ashley Schnabel's third graders used lingering snow to build model volcanoes that really erupted for a science project.

How many polygons can you create from four triangles? Third graders in Amanda Diffley's and Melissa McCormack's classes figured it out.

Jake Burt's fifth graders created elaborate Scratch projects, colorful games, detailed dioramas and descriptive journal entries as final projects for their Survival Fiction unit (pictured).
