Book Swap Begins Feb. 29

THE BOOK SWAP IS COMING!
Time for your children to sort through their bookshelves.

The Book Swap will take place Monday, Feb. 29 through Friday, March 4 in the Sturley Room (below the Library). The swap is an opportunity for students to exchange books they've outgrown for books they want to read. It's a fun and popular event that's been a Foote tradition for decades.

All books brought in for the Swap should be appropriate for children in preschool through ninth grade. We especially need books for grades 4 and above. Leftover books will be donated to Horizons at Foote and New Haven Reads. Your unwanted books will help spread the joy of reading to others!

Parent volunteers are needed to make the Book Swap a success.  Click here to sign up.

Donate Books for Horizons at Foote

The Community Service Club and Horizons at Foote, the school's summer program for low-income New Haven Public School students, are teaming up for a book drive. The dual goal is to build awareness for the Horizons program and to build the program's library. We are collecting children's books for all ages: picture books, early and middle readers, and chapter books.

Collection boxes are in classrooms and at the front desk. The book drive runs through Feb. 18. If you have questions, contact Leah Andelsmith (landelsmith@footeschool.org) or Horizons at Foote Director Jaime Cole (jcole@footeschool.org). Thank you.

Foote Fund Calling Night Reminder

A BIG thank you to those families who have already contributed to the 2015-16 Foote Fund. We really hope to achieve our goal of 100% parent participation by the 100th day of school on Tuesday, Feb. 16

Your class captains will again be making calls to those who haven't yet given this coming Monday, Feb. 8. If you'd like to cross your name off the calling list, please make your gift online now by clicking here or email Amy Caplan in the Development Office regarding how you plan to donate. Remember that any NEW or INCREASED gifts will be matched as part of our $100,000 Centennial Challenge - but only until Feb. 16.

  Exploring Body Systems Through Dissection

Sixth graders are studying human body systems in science class and are conducting a variety of labs, including dissections. Students are working alone or with a partner to study one body system over the course of a month, completing a lab and model, and sharing their discoveries with classmates.

Under the guidance of teacher Kim Birge-Liberman, the students recently dissected a sheep's brain (to learn about the nervous system), a cow's eye (to learn about sight), chicken wings (muscular and skeletal systems), owl pellets (digestive systems) and sheep lungs (respiratory system).  Afterward, students wrote lab reports reflecting on their process and what they learned.

Here are a few student reactions:

"When Ms. B gave us the owl pellets, I thought 'ew, gross.' But once I got into the lab my feelings quickly changed. I thought it was cool how so many bones - more than 60 - can fit into an owl pellet that small!"

"This was an amazing experience. I got to see firsthand how air traveled in and out of the lungs, and how the air is stored inside the lungs. I am really lucky to have had this encounter with such an amazing organ."

"This lab was gross, interesting and cool all packed into one ball of science."

From the Faculty Blogs
Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jess McKinney's Kindergartners examined how they are all alike, and all different, in a collaborative storytelling project.

Jake Burt
's fifth graders visited the Peabody Museum's Egypt collection and thought critically about what they saw - and didn't see (pictured).

A hairdryer, plastic bag and colored liquids were the tools Leslie Long used to teach third graders about convection currents in the Earth's mantle.
