Visiting Artist To Students:
"You Are All Composers"

Composer Rob Kapilow spent at inspirational three days at Foote this week as the inaugural guest of the Ellie Warburg Class of 1945 Visiting Artist Program.

At assemblies for each grade, Rob and the Haven String Quartet performed Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and broke it down line-by-line to examine what makes it great. A few lucky students even got the chance to guest conduct!

At an evening concert for the Foote community, the ensemble performed Rob's original composition "And Furthermore They Bite," which incorporates animal-themed poems that students had read in class. In attendance were Ellie Warburg's husband, George, and other family members and classmates.

In music classes, Rob engaged students in a collaborative and energetic exercise called "The Music of Art," in which students used a painting as inspiration to create an original piece of vocal music.

Based on the same painting -  John Singleton Copley's "The Rescue" - three sections of third grade came up with different words and sound effects to create three distinct compositions. (Click below to watch). Rob's overarching message to students: "You are all composers."

Produced by former Foote parent Edgar Smith of Geomatrix Productions in Woodbridge, the video will give interested families a glimpse into our exciting and challenging Middle School program. Many teachers, parents, students and board members contributed their time and insights to this project.

We hope you will take a few minutes to watch the video and share it via email or social media with anyone interested in learning more about Foote.

Recess in the Snow

The first snow of 2016 provided great fun at recess for Lower Schoolers, who worked together building snowmen and snow forts and careened down the recess field on all manner of sleds. Find more photos on our Facebook page.

From the Faculty Blogs

Foote alum Grace Peard '05 had deja vu as her first graders took a "flight" to Africa- something she did in the very same classroom two decades ago.

Cara Hames' second graders created Body Benchmark Beings to learn about estimation and measuring.

Fourth graders in John Climie's class traveled to Calvin Hill Daycare to read with their preschool buddies, then wrote reflections on their experience (pictured).
