DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Enacting the Immigrant Experience on Ellis Island

To cap off their study of immigration, fourth graders this week took part in a simulation of Ellis Island, circa 1900. Each student played the role of either hopeful immigrant or customs official. Immigrants were given information cards with their name, age and nationality, as well as details about their family, medical and employment history. True to life, some immigrants were admitted while others were deported back to their home countries.

Afterward, students were asked to reflect on the experience: what they enjoyed, what they disliked about it, and what they learned. "I learned that immigrants had to wait in line for hours to get interrogated for 30 seconds," wrote one student. "I also learned that if you were an officer you had power. The officers got to choose who got into America. It was an important decision because people's lives were on the line."

Kinderg
artners engaged in day three of a new outdoor education program, developing creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills through unstructured play (pictured). Jess McKinney and Tricia Simon have photos.

Kindergartners welcomed a very special guest - Foote parent and professional violinist Yaira Matyakubova - who provided a live soundtrack to a picture book about emotions. Alexandra Wittner has photos.

Margy Lamere
's second graders learned ab
out the history of Hanukkah from a guest who's taught a generation of Foote students about the Jewish holiday.

How many stacked books can eggshells hold without breaking? Cara Hames' second graders investigated that question for a science unit.
