There will be no school and no Vacation Program.

Please Give to the Thanksgiving Food Drive

Time is running out to donate to the Thanksgiving Food Drive for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Hamden. Each grade is asked to collect a specific item by Tuesday, Nov. 17 so we can help St. Ann's fill 200 bags with fixings for a Thanksgiving Day meal. We are also raising money to purchase 25 turkeys (collection box at the front desk).

In the past, Foote's donations have left St. Ann's pantry shelves overflowing and we are hoping for a similar show of generosity this year. Your donations help ensure that our neighbors in need have a good Thanksgiving. Thank you.

Foote Fund Off to a Strong Start

Dear Parents,

I want to convey my warmest thanks to the outstanding parent volunteers who braved a rainy evening Tuesday to come together and reach out to Foote parents for support of the Foote Fund (formerly called the Annual Fund). Board members and Class Captains worked together on the phones and were rewarded with many gifts and pledges and strong interest in taking advantage of the school's Centennial Challenge.

If you haven't yet contributed, please keep in mind:

Our Centennial Challenge: A generous donor has offered Foote the chance to add an extra $100,000 to the Foote Fund this year, as we celebrate the Centennial. This would make an incredible difference in the school's operating budget!

The $100,000 can be earned as a match in 2 ways:
  • All gifts from donors who did not contribute last year will be matched dollar for dollar. (i.e., $125 from a new donor will bring $250 to Foote)
  • For continuing donors, any increase over last year's gift will be matched. (i.e., if you gave $100 last year and you give $200 this year, the $100 increase will be matched for a total of $300 to Foote.)
One important detail: The challenge will match only those gifts received during the first 100 days of the school year -- by February 16, 2016.

Let's all pull together to make this happen for Foote, for the benefit of every Foote student. Contributions can be made online or by sending check to the Development Office. Please contact me or Ann Baker Pepe (abakerpepe@footeschool.org) if you have questions.

Thank you!

Winter Sports at Foote

Winter sports will begin on Monday, Nov. 30. Our first day will consist of a whole group meeting, individual team meetings, uniform hand-out for basketball and squash teams and uniform fitting/ordering for swim team. All teams will begin practices on the court or in the pool on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our competitions and I am excited to partner with you to help all of our student athletes get the best out of their athletic experience this winter. Each team's schedule will soon be posted on the Foote School website. Keep an eye on the announcement section of the homepage for practices or games that are postponed or canceled. Below you will find a list of equipment needed for each sport this winter.

Boys/Girls Basketball: properly fitting sneakers (basketball sneakers preferred for appropriate ankle support), shorts and t-shirt

Reversible practice jerseys will be handed out with uniforms, but if a student would like to order a practice jersey to keep they can bring in $20 and one will be ordered.

Squash: squash sneakers (no black on the sole of the sneaker), squash racket, protective eye glasses, shorts and t-shirt.

Parking for Parent Conferences

Please remember to park only on the school side of Loomis Place for tonight's parent-teacher conferences. The opposite side is residents-only; parking there  subjects your car to ticketing or towing by the city of New Haven. It's important for Foote to be a good neighbor - thanks for your help.

Reminder: Secondary School Recommendations

Parents of Eighth and Ninth graders:

If your child intends to apply to secondary schools this year, please remember that all recommendation forms must be submitted to the proper teacher and the Registrar's office by Wednesday, Nov. 25. On or before that date, please send an email with the subject line "Schools Applying To" to Liam Considine (lconsidine@footeschool.org) and Erika Villa (evilla@footeschool.org) indicating the final list of schools to which your child will be applying.

Additionally, please encourage your child to carefully complete and submit the student questionnaire that Mr. Considine distributed this week.

Fall Sports Season Recap

Foote's sports teams had a great fall season, scoring hard-earned victories, learning from losses and growing as individuals and as teams through every practice and game. Click here for a team-by-team season recap, and click here for a gallery of fall sports photos.

Learning the Crafts of Early America

Third graders went back in time to the 1830s this week to learn the art of making early American crafts. Dressed in period clothing, the students capped their study of early America with a day of hands-on learning. In classrooms, they made period crafts: cross-stitch, silhouettes, tin ornaments, handmade books and spinning picture cards called thaumatropes. Classes also toured the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden and previously visited Sturbridge Village to experience life in the 19th century.

From the Faculty Blogs

For Veterans Day, Margy Lamere's second graders read a picture book about the true story of the Berlin Airlift and candy that dropped from the sky.

Adam Solomon's fifth graders found 30 different animals living in the Foote Woods and created food webs to show how they are interconnected (pictured).

How is Foote a spiritual place? Head of Middle School John Turner examined that topic for a presentation he gave at a Columbia University summit of educators this week.

Curriculum Coordinator Lauren Goldberg used Veterans Day as a lens to view the essential questions guiding her eighth grade U.S. History class.
