Halloween Parade & Fair Schedule

The annual Halloween Parade and Fair is Friday, Oct. 30. Here is the schedule of events:
  • 12:30 p.m. - All School Dismissal. There will be no After School Program, sports practices or play rehearsal. Eighth and ninth graders will remain on campus. Parents of students in grades K-7 are responsible for their children from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., and again after the parade. If going home between 12:30 and 1:45 will be problematic, parents are welcome to bring lunch and eat with their children at one of the picnic tables on campus.
  • 1:45 p.m. - Students in grades K-7 meet in classrooms
  • 2:00 p.m. - Halloween parade on the Middle School recess field, followed by the fair
  • 4:00 p.m. - Fair ends
  • 5:00 p.m. - Pickup for eighth and ninth graders
Kindergarten and Grades 1 & 2 students will return to classrooms after the parade to meet their parents. Parents may then take their children to the fair.

Third graders
will meet their parents at the hill by the arts building after the parade.

Fourth graders will be dismissed to their parents on the Middle School recess field at the end of the parade.

Fifth, sixth and seventh graders have responsibilities at the fair and will be free to enjoy the fair with parents when their jobs are done.

Eighth and ninth graders will remain on campus after dismissal to set up and decorate. They will need to bring a lunch, and they must stay after the fair to help as the clean up crew.  The ninth grade manages the food tables and food sales. Their proceeds go toward a class gift. Pickup is at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for games, food and other fair activities
go on sale Monday, Oct. 26. Tickets cost 25 cents each and will be available at various locations on campus before 8:15 a.m. Tickets will also be sold at the fair. Buying tickets ahead of time allows you to avoid the long ticket line that day. All proceeds from the fair will be donated to Columbus House.

** Please note that the city prohibits parking on the residential side of Loomis Place.

Shelter Drill a Success

The all-school shelter drill this week was a success. Students followed teachers' instructions in a calm and orderly manner. After every building was determined to be secure, faculty received a text message from the school alerting them to return to classrooms. There will be an additional shelter drill in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Head of School Carol Maoz or Business Manager Jay Cox.

5th Grade Math Enrichment Opportunity

For the past few years, Foote has offered an after-school math enrichment activity for fifth graders using materials drawn from the MathCounts national program. We are now happy to extend this activity to all students one Saturday per month, from October through February. There is no financial cost to participate in the Saturday program.

The dates for these meetings are: Oct. 24, Nov. 7, Dec. 12, Jan. 23 and Feb. 20. Meetings are in the Twichell Room from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and we usually bring some snacks.

Students may attend one meeting, all meetings, or anything in between. There is no homework and no pressure. This is our third year running the program, and we have learned how to make it accessible to students of all levels.

All fifth grade students will also have the opportunity to participate in the second annual "Foote Invitational" from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, where other local schools bring their teams to Foote for a fun day of competition.

Support Foote With Grocery Purchases

Is your Stop & Shop card registered to earn rewards for Foote through the A+ School Rewards Program? This program costs you nothing, but helps Foote to earn rewards every time you shop. Last year our rewards totaled $3,000. If you registered within the past two years, you do not have to re-register. If you are not sure, please click here to sign up online. All you need is your Stop & Shop card number and your last name, and select The Foote School to earn your rewards. And remember to swipe your card every time you shop-every dollar counts.

How would you feel if you could donate 5 percent of your weekly Stop & Shop bill to Foote - at no cost to you? Now, guess how much you spend at Stop & Shop throughout the year (shudders!), and imagine donating 5 percent of that total to Foote - again, at no cost to you! You can make this happen simply by using Stop & Shop's "Cash for Causes" gift cards to buy your groceries. Here's how it works: you buy a $100 Stop & Shop "Cash for Causes" gift card from the PTC. You go to Stop & Shop and get $100 worth of groceries. Foote earns $5 from Stop & Shop on the sale of that gift card. Gift cards are available for purchase at the Front Desk or by contacting Vicki Murphy at vgmurphy1848@comast.net.

The Road Not Taken on Bear Mountain

While climbing Bear Mountain last week, sixth graders stopped in yellow wood (where two paths diverged) to recite a Robert Frost poem they have been learning. The entire sixth grade hiked Connecticut's highest peak (2,316 feet), a rugged climb that ties into the journeys theme in Humanities and life science, and requires a great deal of patience and perseverance. Click below to watch.

Investigating How Autumn Leaves Fall

Kindergartners in Jess McKinney's class noticed the beautiful autumn leaves changing color and falling to the ground. So they did a science experiment to find out which leaves spin as they fall. After cutting out leaf shapes from paper and making predictions about which ones would spin, they climbed on top of tables to test their hypotheses.

From the Faculty Blogs

Hilary Pearson's first graders are sharing their writing with one another to get constructive feedback and help improve their craft.

To enhance their study of birds, first and second graders were visited by real raptors this week, plus a turtle with a Lego leg. Grace Peard, Cara Hames, Margy Lamere and Kim Yap have photos.

In preparation for their field trip to Sturbridge Village, third graders in Melissa McCormack's class researched the different trades they would be observing.

Fifth graders had a thrilling trip to Deer Lake, where they did rock-climbing, pond study, canoeing, and more (pictured). Jim Adams, Jake Burt and Adam Solomon have photos.
