Lights, Camera, Foote School!

We recently completed work on a new school video and are proud to share it with the Foote community. The video was produced by Edgar Smith (a past Foote parent) and his crew at Woodbridge-based Geomatrix Productions. Many Foote teachers, students, parents and board members contributed their time and insights to make it a terrific reflection of our school.

We hope you will take a few minutes to watch the video and share it via email or social media with anyone interested in learning more about Foote.

Sixth Grade Scientists Practice Field Sketching

Kim Birge-Liberman recently took her sixth grade Life Science classes out to the community garden for plant observation and field sketching. Students were tasked with making detailed color drawings at three different "zooms" - one featuring the whole plant and two smaller sections - with accurate representations of the leaf, flower and fruit. Students also made observations about how the plants felt and smelled, took measurements and collected other quantitative data about their subjects.

Learning Interviewing Skills...and Foote History

What was Foote School like in the early 1950s? Was there a library? Did third graders do the maypole dance, as they do now? Was there Field Day? What did students do in art class?

As part of Foote's Centennial year activities, third graders learned about school history while polishing their interviewing skills during a visit from Foote alumna (and longtime Grade 3 teacher) Lisa Totman, Foote class of 1956.

The students listened attentively as Mrs. Totman recalled school days in the old carriage house on Saint Ronan Street, the teachers who inspired her love of history, math and geography, and the traditions and events she still remembers clearly.

The children asked thoughtful questions of Mrs. Totman, such as: How much homework did she have (45 minutes a night - and that was just math!). Was there a playground? (Yes, but it was an asphalt lot). Did students have specials back then? (Yes, art and music). Did students learn languages? (Not until the upper grades, when the boys took Latin and the girls took French).

The visit was a warm-up for this weekend, when students will interview a grandparent or another person for a class project.

Looking Back: Parents and Tech

This week's blast from Foote's past:

Since its formation in 1923, the Foote PTC has supported students and the school in countless ways, including purchasing tricycles.

Technology has changed at Foote over the years, but the excitement of learning with tech tools has remained a constant for decades.

From the Faculty Blogs

After learning about insects and their habitats, Grace Peard's first graders designed and built creative insects of their own.

As part of their ecology study, Adam Solomon's fifth graders scoured the Foote woods for animal life (pictured).

How did ancient Romans dress? A few of Tina Hansen's seventh grade Latin students modeled the attire.

Lely Evans posted video documenting her students' progress in learning Mandarin.
