A Fabulous First Day

There were smiles, hugs and joyful learning across campus as students and families returned to Foote for the start of a new school year. Lower School students spent the morning getting to know each other and their classrooms before diving into music, art, modern languages and other specials classes.

Middle School students boarded buses for outdoor, team-building activities as part of Project Week. Among the off-campus learning adventures were raft-building in Farmington (pictured above), a marine-life cruise in Norwalk and geo-caching in Torrington. Meanwhile, ninth graders spent the day in Cape Cod, undertaking a 25-mile bike ride on day two of their class retreat.

The first day of school is always exciting but this year felt extra special as Foote marks its centennial year, celebrating our first century as we kick off our second.

A Reminder About Parking

As the school year gets underway, parents are reminded to observe traffic and parking guidelines for drop-off and pick-up.
  • Enter Loomis Place from Highland Street at all times, but remember that Loomis Place is legally a two-way street.
  • Use the school side of Loomis Place only. Parking on the residential side may subject you to ticketing or towing.
  • Do not double park or make U-turns on Loomis Place
  • The Canner Street circle is available for drop-off and pick-up only. Cars must immediately clear the circle when buses are arriving and departing.
  • Children should exit vehicles on the curb side only.

Thank you for helping us to be a good neighbor.

Details About the New Haven Road Race

To kick off our centennial year, Foote will field a team of 170 runners at this year's New Haven Road Race on Labor Day, Sept. 7.

For those participating, there will be a group photo on the day of the race at 7:45 a.m. on the steps of Center Church on the Green.

If you are running and have reserved a Team Foote tech shirt, they are available for pick up in the Alumni and Development Office until Friday, Sept. 4 at 4:00 p.m.

On race day, Foote will have a tent on the upper part of the green (between Temple and College streets) where you can leave belongings. After the race, make sure to stay for the awards ceremony, as prizes will be awarded to the top finishing Foote student and Foote community member in each race.

Thank you for helping us kick off Foote's centennial year. We'll see you on race day!

What I Learned This Summer: Sue Shaw

For a new blog series, Foote faculty share how their summers reflected the school's motto, "Gladly will I learn and gladly teach." This week, Learning Support specialist Sue Shaw discusses teaching in Foote's new summer enrichment program, Horizons at Foote.

Sue spent the summer teaching 16 first graders from New Haven Public Schools, who came to Foote for a six-week program that blended literacy and math with the arts, technology, swimming instruction and other activities aimed at boosting self-confidence.

Photos from Annie
In June and July, students in Foote's Summer Theater Program worked hard to stage a world-class production of the hit musical Annie. Under the guidance of Director Julian Schlusberg and his experienced summer theater faculty, students constructed the set, stitched costumes and performed as Orphan Annie, Daddy Warbucks and the other Annie characters we know and love. The production even featured a live animal on stage - the dog "Sandy" from the Broadway production - a first for the Summer Theater Program.

Looking Back: From the Foote Archives
The Class of 1984 in Vermont.
In celebration of Foote's Centennial this year, Foote alums Kate Reilly Yurkovsky '09 and Caroline Monahan '08 created a Foote history blog during a summer internship in the Alumni and Development Office. The blog features weekly posts with photos and stories drawn from the school archives, named for alumna Anna Huntington Deming '35.

This week, as ninth graders complete their three-day trip to Cape Cod, we look back on a ninth grade trip from another era of Foote. Click here to read about this and other chapters of Foote's history on our archives blog.
From the Faculty Blogs
Margy Lamere's second graders wasted no time getting to the community garden for sketching and a scavenger hunt (pictured).

Grace Peard's first graders joined Cara Hames' second graders to brainstorm a list of adjectives to describe characters in Charlotte's Web.

New Haven among the worst towns in America? Head of Middle School John Turner would beg to differ.
