Welcome to a New School Year!

Dear Parents,

I hope that you have had a wonderful summer filled with adventures and relaxing family time. We are busily preparing for the 2015-16 school year, greeting our new faculty members and readying our classrooms to welcome students next week.

This school year promises to be a special one, as we celebrate Foote's Centennial. We will kick off the festivities at the New Haven Road Race on Labor Day, Sept. 7, with a team of more than 100 runners representing our school. (If you would like to participate, see below for more information). Many more special events throughout the year will explore the history of our school, and of New Haven and the world in 1916.

We also welcome our Chinese guest teacher, Luo Jingbo, who is visiting from Yali, our sister school in Changsha. Luo Jingbo will spend the fall semester teaching students about Chinese culture, history and language, and I encourage you all to introduce yourselves and help her get to know the New Haven area.

I also wanted to share the news that our school counselor, Veena Raghuvir, will not be returning this year. Veena and her family have moved out of state and we wish them all the best as they pursue new opportunities. We are actively searching for Veena's replacement and will share news as soon as possible.

As always, please stop by to say hello, or make an appointment to discuss any concerns you may have as the year gets underway. Enjoy your last few days of summer, and I look forward to greeting you on campus next week.

Warmly,

Meet Our New Faculty Members

Foote welcomed eight new faculty members this week, who arrived with energy, enthusiasm and a diverse range of teaching experiences. Among this year's crop of new teachers are two Foote alums (Grace Peard '05 and Samantha Mashaw '04) and our Chinese guest teacher, Luo Jingbo, from our sister school Yali in Changsha, China.

In true Foote fashion, the new faculty members were welcomed with a song at the first all-school faculty meeting on Thursday. Drama Director (and Faculty Orientation Committee chair) Julian Schlusberg led the entire faculty in a heartwarming rendition of "Getting to Know You" from the musical The King and I, with faculty members accompanying on piano, guitar, banjo, violin and ukelele.

Horizons at Foote Makes a Splash

Foote's new summer enrichment program, Horizons at Foote, had an incredible inaugural year. Forty-eight low-income New Haven Public School students entering grades 1, 2 & 3 came to Foote for a six-week, full-day program that combined literacy, math and arts with daily swimming at Albertus Magnus College.

Each day, the students enjoyed a healthy breakfast and lunch served family-style. They participated in yoga, gymnastics, art and music, tended a garden, and enjoyed enriching field trips to the beach, a farm, art galleries and museums.

The goal of the program is to reverse summer learning loss and help close the student achievement gap. As a sign of Foote's commitment to the new program, several current and former faculty members, alumni and current students signed on as classroom teachers, interns and swim instructors.

The summer program was featured on News Channel 8 and in the New Haven Register. For more photos and information, visit the Horizons at Foote Facebook page, and look for an article on the program in the fall issue of Foote Prints magazine.
