Summer Book Fair - June 1 & 2

The Summer Book Fair will be held June 1 & 2 in the Perrine Library. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to view the terrific selection of titles chosen by Foote's librarians and to get a head start on purchasing summer reading for children. Rising seventh, eighth and ninth graders can purchase summer reading books at the fair. Students will need to bring cash or check to school.

Summer Reading!

A note from Head Librarian Lynda Johnson:

Starting today (May 28) during their Library time, I am giving each child currently in grades K-5 the Summer Book chosen by the teachers for them and you to read over the summer. If your child is entering grades 7, 8 or 9 in the fall, he or she will have a selection of books from which to choose. Either a Middle School Humanities teacher or I will have introduced the 'choice books' to your children. The 'choice books' will be available in paperback at the Book Fair next Monday and Tuesday in the Library.

Please also be sure to look for an email from the school about Summer Reading. Each family will receive a letter outlining the Summer Reading requirements for each grade in which they will have a student next year.

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
A Marvelous May Day

Under bright sunshine and bluebird skies, families gathered on Rike Field for the annual May Day celebration last week. As they have for nine decades, Foote students performed a variety of traditional country dances, highlighted by the third grade Maypole dance and the ninth grade Sleights Sword Dance. Look for a gallery with more photos on our website in the coming days.

Spring Scrapbook Vol. 2: A Week in the Life of Foote

The school year's final week of regular classes was filled with exciting experiments, physical challenges and inspired works of art. Here's a sampling of the dynamic learning that takes place in a single week at Foote.

Fourth graders in Wenyan Witkowsky's Chinese class earned tickets for learning phrases this year, and redeemed them for treats at a mock Chinese market.

MAG students in Angela Ginnella's Spanish class made their own pinatas.

Sixth graders designed silk ties with floral patterns in Jennifer Youngblood's art class, learning about template construction and composition.

Foote parent and New Haven police officer Jeffrey Fletcher shared his incredible collection of slavery- and segregation-era artifacts with middle school humanities classes.

Fifth graders tested the solar ovens they designed and built in John Cunningham's science class, melting a piece of chocolate and recording data.

Ninth graders rendered their own interpretations of famous impressionist paintings using oil on canvas.

Fourth graders showed off their research and public speaking skills for a "wax museum" project, impersonating famous Americans with monologues and costumes.

Eighth graders capped off their outdoor education unit by tackling the campus ropes course. Students worked in pairs to climb the "dangling duo"...

...while other students tested their skill and concentration on the "multi-vine traverse."

From the Faculty Blogs

Alexandra Wittner's Kindergartners are building a miniature Foote School, complete with pipe-cleaner furniture.

Hilary Pearson's first and second graders capped off a science unit on liquids by testing two new liquids (pictured).

The 90-Second Newbury films created this year by Jim Adams' fifth graders include super-short adaptations of Jacob Have I Loved, The Door in the Wall and The Westing Game.

How does the dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park relate to Foote's learning philosophy? Curriculum Coordinator Lauren Goldberg explains.
