Designing Aracade Games in STEM Class

For their final STEM project of the year, third graders are designing and making their own arcade games from recycled cardboard boxes. Inspired by Caine's Arcade, the project challenges students to design and construct a freestanding game using simple materials and tools such as glue, magic marker, rubber balls and special saws. Each student must give his or her game a name, design a logo and rate its degree of difficulty and the cost to play.  Under the guidance of Leslie Long and Julianne Ross-Kleinmann, the students set to work refashioning cereal, shoe and laptop computer boxes into imaginative and challenging games with names like "Tyler's Golf," "Pool Table" and "The Adventures of the Boos."

From the Faculty Blogs

Drawing inspiration from a Russell Erickson tale, first and second graders enjoyed a "Toad for Tuesday Lunch" in Margy Lamere and Hilary Pearson's classrooms.

In science, third graders are learning why things sink or float as they conduct "fair test" experiments (pictured). Melissa McCormack and Amanda Diffley have details.
