Thank You for a Fabulous
Faculty Breakfast!

Dear Parents,

We are so grateful to you for making yesterday's Faculty & Staff Appreciation Breakfast such a special occasion. The breakfast spread was simply incredible and the beautiful flowers brightened all of our days. Your homemade goodies were a delightful treat for teachers during a busy time of the year. Foote is very lucky to have such a thoughtful parent body that participates in making our school a warm and welcoming community. Thank you for the memorable breakfast and for all that you do.

Warmly,

Tomorrow: Pajama Day to Benefit IRIS

Tomorrow, Friday, May 15, is Pajama Day. Students are welcome to wear pajamas to school; please follow the guidelines for appropriate dress outlined on page 12 of the Parent Handbook.

Students are asked to bring a gently used stuffed animal or children's book to donate to IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services). Thank you!

Dress Guidelines for May Day

May Day is a special tradition at Foote. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the celebration of spring on Friday, May 22, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Rike Field. Students are asked to follow the guidelines below:

Boys: White or khaki dress pants
(no jeans, sweatpants, warm-up pants or shorts). Solid-color button-down or golf shirt (no T-shirts or sweatshirts). Clean sneakers.

Girls: Spring-colored dress, skirt and blouse or pantsuit (no black, please). No jeans, sweatpants, warm-up pants, shorts, T-shirts or sweatshirts. Clean sneakers. Girls in grades 3 and up may bring sandals to wear when not dancing.

iPod Drive at Foote

Foote is having an "iPods For Alzheimer's" drive! Be part of the national Music and Memory Project that is changing lives for so many people in nursing homes.

Your unwanted iPods will be used in music therapy for patients with dementia. Drop them off at the front desk. Foote parent Dr. Benjamin Lee (Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale) will see that they are used at the Alzheimer's Resource Center in Plantsville, CT. Patients will receive individualized playlists and be able to hear their music with help from trained volunteers.

To raise awareness for this project, Community Service Club members and our seventh and eighth graders have been watching and discussing a wonderful short video, "Alive Inside," narrated by neuroscientist Oliver Sacks. It concerns Henry, an elderly man in a nursing home, who "comes back to himself" through music.

Thanks for your contribution to this important cause!

Grade 8 - Secondary School Planning

As a reminder, rising eighth grade families are invited to make an appointment with Liam Considine during May, June or July to discuss planning for secondary school admissions. While meeting before next year is not required, many families have found it helpful to begin the dialogue about secondary school planning before the beginning of the school year.

To make an appointment, please contact Erika Villa at evilla@footeschool.org, or 203-777-3464 ext. 208.

Spring Scrapbook: A Week in the Life of Foote

Walk around Foote on any given day, and you'll see an incredible variety of fascinating learning taking place. That's especially true in the springtime, when classes head outside to conduct science experiments, practice Latin, read and play. Here's a scrapbook of just some of the excitement from this past week.

After taking an all-school photo to commemorate Foote's upcoming centennial, students learned which team won Field Day.

Fourth graders rehearse a square dance with Ellen Velardi in preparation for May Day

Seventh graders build and program mobile robots in Tim Blauvelt's Environmental Science class.

Third graders collaborate on a Scratch programming project in Julianne Ross-Kleinmann's computer class

Fourth graders lead a book club discussion of "The Liberation of Gabriel King" in Denise Quinn's class.

Eighth graders conduct a mock trial of Brutus as part of Drew Sweet's Latin class.

Sixth graders created designs on Tinkercad then manufactured them using a 3-D printer in Tony Bures' computer class.

From the Faculty Blogs

Kindergartners in Tricia Simon and Lynne Banta's class are observing and dreaming up names for their newly hatched chicks (pictured).

Margy Lamere's first and second graders drilled bamboo sticks to make their own Kokopelli flutes.

Fifth graders' study of ancient Greece came to life on a visit to the Slater Museum with teacher Jake Burt.
