Enjoy Westville ArtWalk This Weekend, and Benefit Foote!

Longtime eighth grade stone carving instructor and Foote parent Gar Waterman will donate 10 percent of any sculpture sales at Kehler Liddell Gallery during this weekend's ArtWalk to support Foote. Buyers may direct the contribution to the Foote School Financial Aid Program or Horizons at Foote, Foote's summer enrichment program for New Haven Public School students.

Celebrate Westville's Annual ArtWalk and enjoy Gar's "Insipient Speciation" exhibition of beautiful sculptures in exotic marble and onyx. Kehler Liddell Gallery is located at 873 Whalley Ave., New Haven. KLG ArtWalk hours are Friday 11-9, Saturday 10-5, and Sunday 10-4.

Pajama Day to Benefit IRIS - May 15

Friday, May 15 will be a Pajama Day. Students are welcome to wear pajamas to school; please follow the guidelines for appropriate dress outlined on page 12 of the Parent Handbook.

On that day, students are asked to bring a gently used stuffed animal or children's book to donate to IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services).  Thank you!

iPod Drive at Foote

Foote is having an "iPods For Alzheimer's" drive! Be part of the national Music and Memory Project that is changing lives for so many people in nursing homes.

Your unwanted iPods will be used in music therapy for patients with dementia. Drop them off at the front desk. Foote parent Dr. Benjamin Lee (Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale) will see that they are used at the Alzheimer's Resource Center in Plantsville, CT. Patients will receive individualized playlists and be able to hear their music with help from trained volunteers.

To raise awareness for this project, Community Service Club members and our seventh and eighth graders have been watching and discussing a wonderful short video, "Alive Inside," narrated by neuroscientist Oliver Sacks. It concerns Henry, an elderly man in a nursing home, who "comes back to himself" through music.

Thanks for your contribution to this important cause!

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
A Fantastic Field Day

Greys and Maroons gave it their all on Field Day, showing sportsmanship, teamwork and school spirit during a fun and exciting day. Students paraded down Loomis Place to Rike Field, where they competed in the fireman's carry, three-legged race, tug-o-war and other events. Which team won? Students will find out May 28 during the annual yearbook assembly. In the meantime, find more photos on our Facebook page.

Festival of the World....

Last week, sixth graders showcased all they've learned about world cultures this year with a Festival of the World - a research fair, music and dance performance, and international feast all rolled into one. On the first day of school, each sixth grader spins a globe and stops it with his or her finger; wherever that finger lands is the country the student studies for the next eight months and presents on at the festival. The interdisciplinary event featured music from Ghana, New Zealand and Mexico, poems in Spanish, French and Chinese and facts about world religions and global hunger. Adorning the Hosley Gym were Oaxacan-inspired paintings made in art class and original travel posters created in computer class.

First and second graders enjoyed an early morning bird walk in East Rock Park with naturalist (and past Foote parent) Chris Woerner. Margy Lamere has photos.

Capping their year-long study of Native American cultures, first and second graders held an open house for parents (pictured). Sue Delaney and Cara Hames have photos.

Ashley Schnabel's third graders practiced their fluency and expression outdoors with some Readers' Theatre selections.
