iPod Drive at Foote

Foote is having an "iPods For Alzheimer's" drive! Be part of the national Music and Memory Project that is changing lives for so many people in nursing homes.

Your unwanted iPods will be used in music therapy for patients with dementia. Drop them off anytime at the front desk, and Foote parent Dr. Benjamin Lee (Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale) will see that they are used at the Alzheimer's Resource Center in Plantsville, CT, where patients will receive individualized playlists and be able to hear their music, with help from trained volunteers.

To raise awareness for this project, Community Service Club members and our seventh and eighth graders have been watching and discussing a wonderful short video, "Alive Inside," narrated by neuroscientist Oliver Sacks. It concerns Henry, an elderly man in a nursing home, who "comes back to himself" through music.

Thanks for your contribution to this important cause!

A Computer Minicourse - With a Twist

How are computers built, and how are they programmed? A group of students in the After School Program are learning that and more in a minicourse called "Build a Computer with Kano." Unlike other minicourses, this one is co-taught by a student, seventh grader Nate K., with assistance from Lower School Technology Coordinator Julianne Ross-Kleinmann.

As part of the Friday minicourse, students build computers from kits, learning their component parts, and program their own games with custom rules and fun surprises. The course also covers different types of programming languages such as HTML (for websites) and block programing (like Scatch). Nate proposed the course to faculty and was approved after he presented it at a morning meeting.

From the Faculty Blogs

Margy Lamere's first and second graders spent a beautiful spring afternoon sketching, reading and writing in the community garden.

Head of Lower School Beth Mello posted video of two recent parent meetings that covered changes to the Mixed Age Group structure.

Inspired by the novel they're reading, Adam Solomon's fifth graders tried their hands at radish carving (pictured).
