Parking Tickets on Loomis Place

As a reminder, parking on the residential side of Loomis Place is for residents-only.

The city of New Haven has been ticketing cars on the non-school side of the street this week, and parking there even for a moment could subject your car to ticketing or towing.

Thank you for helping Foote to be a good neighbor.

Raising Environmental Awareness for Earth Day

Earth Day turned into Earth Week at Foote, with a string of activities and special events focusing the school's attention on the environment and what we can do to help protect it.

On National Earth Day, April 22, Miya's Sushi chef and Foote alum Bun Lai '84 came back to campus to headline the Earth Day assembly and receive the Environmental Stewardship Award. Bun spoke about sustainable food systems and his work to raise awareness about invasive species by putting them on his restaurant's menu. And he brought some sushi made with crickets and jellyfish for the students to try!

On Tuesday, middle school classrooms turned off the lights, smart boards, computers and other electronics for the "Dark Day of Enlightenment," a day aimed at raising environmental consciousness and conserving electricity. Students and faculty advisers from Environmental Action Group, which sponsored the event, are working to calculate the day's energy savings.

Foote School - Do One Thing for the Environment
Following a recent presentation by the Alliance for Climate Education, middle school students participated in a campaign called "Do One Thing," focused on small actions each of us can take to lower our carbon footprint. Teachers and students pledged to take shorter showers, turn lights off, use refillable bottles and eat less meat. Click the still frame at left for more.
Fourth Graders Shine at 50 States Fair

Do you know what makes Kansas City barbecue sauce different from other varieties? Can you guess how many islands make up the Hawaiian archipelago? Or which modern-day punk rocker hails from Washington, D.C.?

Those interesting facts and others were on display this week during the fourth grade 50 States Fair held in the Hosley Gym. Fourth graders showed off what they've spent weeks learning about their assigned states.

Each student created a box map of his or her state, a list of state-specific trivia questions and answers, a homemade game or display, a state-themed costume. The students also designed license plates for their states in art class.

At the end of the fair, the students tried something that's never been done for the 50 States Fair: arranging their box maps on the gym floor in the rough shape of the U.S. for a group photo. (pictured at top).

Third Graders Form Didgeridoo Ensemble

As part of their study of Australia, third graders are learning about the culture, music, art and history of the Aboriginal people. Students in Amanda Diffley's class used PVC pipes to make their own didgeridoos, Aboriginal instruments that are traditionally made from hollowed tree branches. On a sunny day this week, the students sat in a circle and played their didgeridoos in the traditional fashion - with some players making the low drone and others imitating animal calls. Click the still frame below for video of the music.

From the Faculty Blogs

Tricia Simon's Kindergartners learned about Muslim traditions (pictured) from a classmate's parents.

For Earth Day, Sue Delaney's first and second graders made a 'tree of life' to honor Native Americans' stewardship of the earth.

Melissa McCormack's third graders are learning research techniques by investigating Australian animals.

Head of Middle School John Turner blogs about the learning opportunities created by "going dark" for a day.
