Foote Math Team Finishes Third in the State

Foote's 2-year-old MathCounts club racked up a huge win over spring vacation, finishing third (out of 27 middle school teams) at the state MathCounts competition held at the University of Hartford.

Seventh grader David Metrick finished third individually and will represent Foote as one of four members of the Connecticut state team at the National MathCounts Competition in Boston in May! Foote sixth grader Ting Li was the top finishing sixth grader at the competition. And MathCounts faculty adviser Megan Williams was selected to serve as a coach for the state team at nationals.

Seven Foote students qualified for the state competition on March 14 and five were able to attend over break: Sixth grader Ting Li, seventh graders Anjali Mangla, David Metrick and Kyle Shin, and eighth grader Clara Li. (Eighth grader Grady Bohen and seventh grader Noah Lee were unable to attend).

Also during March break, Foote hosted MathCounts teams for a JV competition for students who did not compete in the Chapter and State competitions. Teams from Hamden Hall, North Haven Middle School and Hopkins all competed in the event.

"Andrew Metrick, who co-advises the program, and I are both very pleased with all of the students' performances and especially excited that we have a student going to the National Competition in Boston!" Megan says.

Maple Sugaring in the Foote Woods

Foote students got a hands-on lesson in maple sugaring Thursday during the annual maple sap boil in the Sacred Woods. Using sap collected from Foote's sugar maples, Business Manager Jay Cox showed students how clear sap boils down into sweet brown syrup. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup, and the the 90 gallons boiled down Thursday will yield about two gallons of the sweet stuff. Kindergartners have been learning about the science and cultural tradition of maple sugaring and will enjoy the syrup during pancake breakfast celebrations next week. To keep the fire roaring, Mr. Cox used old wood from Foote's original Luckey-designed Climber - which was refurbished with new wood last summer - using the remnants of one Foote tradition to fuel another!

From the Faculty Blogs

Margy Lamere's first and second graders are learning about the wonderful world of whales and whale ships (pictured).

Fifth graders in Jim Adams' class reviewed books they read over spring break...in 15 words or fewer.

On the Perrine Library blog, librarian Jennifer Friedman explains how first and second graders will play book award judges.
