Greetings From China!

Ninth graders are almost halfway into their incredible two-week trip to China. After a delayed departure and some unexpected snafus, the group has been soaking up the culture and history in and around Beijing (including the Great Wall, pictured) before boarding an overnight train to the city of Xi'an. Afterward, they'll visit Foote sister school Yali (and reconnect with the students who visited Foote last fall) and finish the trip in Hong Kong.

Follow their adventures on the China blog.

Egypt Immersion Day
Fifth graders celebrated the end of their months-long study of ancient Egypt on March 3 with Egypt Immersion Day. They dressed up as ancient Egyptians, paraded "Pharaoh Liv the 1st" around campus (carefully avoiding the slick spots), worked in teams to build Play-Doh pyramids and enjoyed a lunchtime feast of dates, chicken, grapes, pita bread and other Egyptian-themed foods (courtesy of their mummies and daddies.) Find more photos on the fifth grader teachers' blogs:  Jim Adams,  Jake Burt and Adam Solomon.
Foote Latin? There's an App For That

Latin teacher Drew Sweet has developed a mobile app to help his students study. The free "Foote Latin App" can be downloaded for iPhone or iPad from the App Store.

The app is aligned with the Latin I textbook, Ecce Romani, and drills users with a randomly generated series of verb forms. Drew, who tinkers with tech as a hobby, started work on the app last summer and used his students as "beta testers" to help him work out the bugs. The hope was to create a fun, interactive way for students to learn Latin. He's collecting data on how many students have used the app and comparing that to how they perform on assessments. So far, the results are encouraging. "People who have used it a lot are really good at identifying conjugated Latin verb forms," Drew reports.

Jess McKinney's Kindergartners learned about the maple sugaring process (the same one used at Foote!) on a field trip to Common Ground High School (pictured).

Amanda Diffley's
third graders continued learning about different volcanoes, and drew diagrams.

Head of Middle School John Turner has a report from this year's National Association of Independent Schools conference in Boston.
