Celebrating the Chinese New Year

Today is Chinese New Year, and there were signs of celebration across campus. In the Twichell Room, sixth graders made Chinese dumplings with teacher Lely Evans. Working in groups, students carefully filled wrappers and pinched them closed before they were boiled and served with chop sticks and dipping sauce.

Cara Hames' first and second grade class had a special visit from parent Lan Lin, who is also a Chinese teacher at Hopkins. Lan taught students about Chinese New Year traditions including the lion dance, and children got to parade across campus in real Chinese lion costumes. Afterward, they went back to the classroom to make dumplings.

Love For the Homeless on Valentine's Day

For Valentine's Day, first and second graders and their sixth grade buddies collected restaurant gift cards for the homeless. Families donated gift cards in amounts of $5, $10 and even $25 for Subway and Dunkin' Donuts to Columbus House. In all, the students collected 313 cards - breaking last year's record of 308!

Columbus House rep and former Foote parent Sheree DiMario (pictured above) came to accept the gift cards on Wednesday and to speak to children about the causes of homelessness and what we can all do to help. Sheree explained that the gift cards not only give homeless individuals food and a place to warm up, they also help build trust with Columbus House, which provides emergency shelter, job training and referrals to medical care. Teacher Margy Lamere says the gift card collection resonates with kids because they frequently see homeless individuals at highway exit ramps or downtown. "It's something they connect with on a personal level," Margy says.

Playing the Odds at Math Night

Sixth graders hosted Math Night on Wednesday, when parents came to campus to learn about the math curriculum and play games of chance the students designed as part of their unit on probability. Earlier in the day, other grades had a chance to try the games during a special preview in the Twichell Room (pictured). Head of Middle School John Turner posted a wrap-up of Math Night on his blog, "News From the Middle."
