Unite Through Understanding Day
Thursday, January 29
Foote will celebrate Unite Through Understanding Day on Thursday, Jan. 29.
The purpose of this all-day event, which takes place every three years at Foote, is to celebrate diversity in all its forms and to guide students in developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of other cultures and of people who otherwise differ from them.
The day will include workshops, classroom diversity activities, a buddy lunch, grade-level activities and an all-school assembly in the Hosley Gym. Look for a complete schedule in next week's Parent E-News.
As a reminder: this is a student-centered event and parents are asked not to attend unless they are presenting a workshop or are directly involved in the planning of the event.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE

A Visit From an Animated Storyteller
|
|
First and second graders were visited by an extraordinary guest on Wednesday: Len Cabral, a master storyteller who has been enchanting children and adults with tales for years. Len told the students assembled in the Twichell Room the story of Coyote and Old Man Winter, about how the seasons came to be, among others. The visit kicked off the students' study of Native American folktales and creation stories. Back in their classrooms, students sequenced Len's story into beginning, middle and end, and will use that to retell the tales using their own pictures.

National Geographic Bee
|
|
Which country is more mountainous: Latvia or Ecuador? Which country is closer to the equator: Papua New Guinea or Greece? Which country consumes more energy: Germany or Paraguay? Thirty-four students in grades 4 through 8 lined up to answer those and other questions Thursday as part of the school's National Geographic Bee. As in years past, two classrooms were needed to accommodate the large number of participants. Today's top scorers will meet in a final round on Jan. 20, from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Foote's top finisher will then complete a written test; the top 100 scorers in Connecticut will meet in the state finals. The winner in each state will compete at the national championship in Washington D.C. in May.
