Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.


An all-school assembly will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, January 16 in the Hosley Gym.

Assembly Dress is required.

Boys: Long pants (no jeans, sweatpants or warm-up pants). Collared shirt (button-down, golf or polo). No T-shirts or sweatshirts, no writing on shirts.

 

Girls: Pants or dress/skirt of an appropriate length (no shorts, jeans or sweat pants). Appropriate top (no spaghetti straps, T-shirts or sweatshirts; no writing on shirts.)

 

School will be dismissed at the regular Friday time. There will be no school on Monday, Jan. 19, the federal holiday celebrating Dr. King's life.

After School Minicourses Start Next Week

After School minicourses begin next week - and there's still time to sign up!

Minicourses are held after school from Monday through Friday for six weeks. They provide a great forum for children learn a new craft or hobby while having fun and expanding their horizons. Featured courses this term include Cartooning Superheroes, Knitting, Great Scientists, Writing and Acting, and Math Enrichment. Please note: the Baking course is now full.

STARS Begins Jan. 17

The 2015 STARS program begins on Saturday, Jan. 17. STARS (which stands for Schools Together for Arts ResourceS) is a six-week program that brings together students and teachers from Foote and New Haven public schools for a series of collaborative workshops in cooking, crafts and multimedia. The program runs on Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., from mid-January through March. It is free to all participants.

Courses offered this year include "Cooking with Stories," "Hello/Hola," and "Young Yogis."

National Geographic Bee

Foote School will again participate in the National Geographic Bee. The school bee will be held next Thursday, Jan. 15 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Students in grades 4-8 are welcome to participate. Please have your child check in with Mrs. Rosenthal in M-30 by Tuesday, Jan. 13 to register. The final round for the top scorers will be held on Jan. 20 from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. The school's top finisher will then complete a written test which will be sent to National Geographic for grading. The top 100 scorers in the state will move on the state competition, and the top finisher there will compete at nationals. Questions? Contact Trevor Rosenthal at trosenthal@footeschool.org.
Free Family Concert Series Begins This Weekend

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra's free family concert series begins this Sunday, Jan. 11 with a performance of "The Story of Babar, The Little Elephant" at New Haven's Davis Street School.

The NHSO's free family series provides a lively introduction to the orchestra with 60-minute concerts designed for the whole family.

Volunteer to Help at the Spring Auction!

For anyone interested in helping out with this year's Spring Auction, there will be an organizational meeting next Thurs., Jan. 15, at 8:15 a.m. in the Sturley Room. The theme for this year's event will be "Foote-Stompin' Barn Dance." All are welcome. Questions? Email  ptcauction@footeschool.org.

'Beat-Boxing' in Spanish Class

First graders in Angela Giannella's Spanish class learned about Latin rhythms the hands-on way this week: by beating on a traditional Cajón drum. One of Angela's students brought in the drum - an Afro-Peruvian instrument that is popular in Spain - and each child had a chance to play it, a musical lesson that tied into their study of Spain.
