Please Give Us Feedback for the Social Studies Curricular Review

Dear Parents,

If you haven't already, please take a few minutes to complete the social studies survey that is part of our curricular review. Click here to access the survey.

Each year, we gather small groups of faculty to conduct intensive evaluations of two or three areas of study at Foote. Our team members review the content and skills that are taught; we visit other schools to observe and collect ideas; we read current research in the field; and we collect insights from alumni, faculty, and current and past parents. We synthesize all of the information with a goal of maintaining the highest level of quality in our teaching.

The survey asks a series of questions about your child(ren)'s experience in social studies. Your responses will be extremely valuable to our review, and I thank you in advance for your time and interest.

Sincerely,

Lauren Goldberg

Curriculum Coordinator

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Fourth Graders Re-create Ellis Island

Fourth grade classrooms were transformed into Ellis Island circa 1900 this week as students wrapped up their immigration unit. As part of the simulation, each student had a job for the hour: either Ellis Island processor or hopeful immigrant. The huddled masses clutched information cards with their name, country of origin and age. Processors interviewed the immigrants about their health and work histories and, true to life, some immigrants were granted citizenship while others were deported. And everyone waited in line. Afterward, the students reflected on the experience in class and in writing. One student commented, "I was full of anxiety wondering if I would make it through the process. I luckily got to immigrate. Some others got deported and that was sad." Find more photos on our Facebook page.

Third Graders Make Early American Crafts

You've seen them before, but do you know what they're called - those round picture cards that spin on two pieces of string? Third graders learned they are called "thaumatropes," and made them - along with other antique crafts - as part of their Early America Day celebration on Thursday. To cap off their study of early America, third graders wore dress typical of the 1830s and made period crafts: cross-stitch, silhouettes, tin ornaments and thaumatropes. Classes also toured the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden and previously visited Sturbridge Village to experience life in the 19th century. Find more photos on our Facebook page.

From the Faculty Blogs

Margy Lamere's MAG students learned the story of Hanukkah from a very special guest (pictured).

Third graders in Ashley Schnabel's class practiced being authors - and constructive critics.

The Foote Woods were the inspiration for poems by Adam Solomon's fifth graders.

Art teacher Karla Matheny has updated her blog with pictures of some of the great artwork students have created this year.

Curriculum Coordinator Lauren Goldberg focuses on a fishy art project to consider what observant young learners can show us, rather than tell us.
