Food Drive Helps to Feed the Hungry on Thanksgiving

This year's Thanksgiving Food Drive was a big success, raising 1,140 canned goods and money to purchase 27 turkeys for guests at St. Ann's soup kitchen in Hamden. Sixth graders coordinated the schoolwide drive and delivered two van loads of food to St. Ann's before Thanksgiving. Click below to watch a video documenting the students' efforts.

Four Score and Seven Days Ago....

As part of their Early America unit in humanities class, seventh graders pick a historical figure to research in depth during the fall term. On the day before Thanksgiving, the unit culminates in Early America Day, when students dress as their historical figures and recite monologues in character for the school. This year's crop included a diverse range of early Americans - from African-American abolitionist James Forten to Squanto, William Penn and Anne Bradstreet, the first female published poet in North America. Singing a Holiday Classic

One of the highlights of the annual Thanksgiving Assembly is first and second graders singing the holiday classic "Over the River and Through the Woods," a Foote tradition for more than 60 years. Click below to watch a video of the performance.

Foote Music Teacher Goes Platinum

Twelve years ago, music teacher Sarah Heath recorded a track with her Heath Sisters trio for the kids album and book "Philadelphia Chickens." Written by author and illustrator Sandra Boynton and composer Michael Ford, the album featured Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, Laura Linney and other artists and celebrities performing original children's songs. Sarah and her sisters recorded "Belly Button (Round)." This week, Sarah received a letter from Boynton informing her the album has gone platinum - meaning it has sold more than 1 million copies! All proceeds from album sales have gone to support a variety of children's charities.

Congratulations to Sarah and her sisters!
Young Alums Reunite on Campus

The Wedneseday before Thanksgiving is Young Alums Day at Foote. This year, close to 100 grads from the classes of 2012 to 2015 returned to Loomis Place to reunite with friends and teachers, and participate in a panel discussion with current ninth graders about options for high school. Find more photos on our website.
From the Faculty Blogs

Jess McKinney and Paige Lane scaled the campus ropes course while their Kindergartners cheered them on from 20 feet below.

First and second graders visited New Pond Farm in Redding to learn how Native Americans lived before European settlers arrived (pictured). Sue Delaney, Emily Buckley, Cara Hames, Margy Lamere, Hilary Pearson and Kim Yap have photos.

To learn about the structure of sonnets, Jake Burt's fifth graders transformed their classroom into an art gallery, with sonnets as the exhibits to be carefully observed.

Lower School Technology Coordinator Julianne Ross-Kleinmann made movie trailers documenting third graders programming Lego robots.

A lot has been happening in the lower grades, and Head of Lower School Beth Mello has a wrap-up.
