Schedule for Halloween Parade

The annual Halloween Parade and Fair falls on Halloween this year, Friday, Oct. 31! Here is the schedule of events:
  • 12:30 p.m. - All School Dismissal. There will be no After School Program, sports practices or play rehearsal. Eighth and ninth graders will remain on campus. Parents of students in grades K-7 are responsible for their children from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., and again after the parade. If going home between 12:30 and 1:45 will be problematic, parents are welcome to bring lunch and eat with your child at one of the picnic tables on campus.

  • 1:45 p.m. - Students in grades K-7 meet in classrooms
  • 2:00 p.m. - Halloween parade on the Middle School recess field, followed by the fair.
  • 4:00 p.m. - Fair ends
  • 4:30 p.m. - Pickup for eighth and ninth graders

Kindergarten and MAG students will return to classrooms after the parade to meet their parents. Parents may then take their children to the fair.

Third graders will meet their parents at the hill by the arts building after the parade.

Fourth graders will be dismissed to their parents on the Middle School recess field at the end of the parade.

Fifth, sixth and seventh graders have responsibilities at the fair and will be free to enjoy the fair with parents when their jobs are done.

Eighth and ninth graders will remain on campus after dismissal to set up and decorate. They will need to bring a lunch. After the fair, they will clean up. The traditional pizza dinner for the clean up crew will be enjoyed at a later date so that students can get home for trick-or-treating. The ninth grade manages the food tables and food sales. Their proceeds go toward a class gift. Pickup is at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets for games, food and other fair activities go on sale Monday, Oct. 27. Tickets cost 25 cents each and will be available at various locations on campus before 8:15 a.m. Tickets will also be sold at the fair. Buying tickets ahead of time allows you to avoid the long ticket line that day. All proceeds from the fair will be donated to Columbus House.

** Please note that the city prohibits parking on the residential side of Loomis Place.

Yellow Onion Skins Needed for Art

Thanks to everyone who brought in pokeberries, flowers, acorns and other supplies for MAG art projects this year. The Art Department now has enough of everything except yellow onion skins. If you have yellow onion skins (only the papery part), please bring them to Jennifer Youngblood's art room. Thank you!

Volunteers Needed for Book Fair

Vision and Hearing Screening

On Oct. 27 & 28 and Nov. 10, school nurse Maryanne Peterson will be checking vision and hearing of all students in Kindergarten through Grade 3, Grade 6, as well as all new students. We need parent volunteers to chaperone students from their classes to the Sturley Room and to help Nursie during the screening.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact
Cristina Baiocco at cbaiocco@hotmail.com, or 203-230-8210.

Are You Registered for Stop & Shop Rewards?

Are you earning rewards for Foote at Stop & Shop? Check your next grocery receipt: you should see your A+ School Rewards summary at the bottom (like in this picture). If you don't see this, it means your Stop & Shop card is not registered to earn points for Foote. Please take 30 seconds and click here
to register online. Our school code is 08832. It costs you nothing; it won't affect Gas Points, and Foote won't see what you buy. But you will help Foote earn money for field trips, summer reading books, and special projects like the new Lower School playground. Last year we earned $3,600 through this program. We need everyone's participation to maximize our rewards.

Thank you!

DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Greetings, From the Top of the State!

The sixth grade scaled Bear Mountain, Connecticut's highest peak (2,316 feet) on Oct. 17, an outing that ties into the science curriculum and the journeys theme in Humanities. The group enjoyed perfect fall weather to make the five-hour trek, and students embraced the challenge with a sense of fun and camaraderie. At the summit, the students read a poem in Chinese about rivers, oceans, trees and mountains, which they learned from guest teacher Li Hong.
Interviewing Grandparents to Learn About 'Then and Now'

One of the concepts Mixed Age Group students are exploring as part of their unit on Native Americans is "then and now' - for instance, what did New Haven look like before Europeans arrived? On Grandparents Day, Kim Yap's students applied the concept by interviewing grandparents and special friends about their youth - how they got to school, their favorite subjects, games they played - and comparing it to their own lives. Grandparents and special friends drew self-portraits, and students illustrated both sets of answers in special books that they presented to the Lower School morning meeting last week. Afterward, Kim recorded her students reading their books aloud, and put the presentation on VoiceThread. Click here to check it out!
Students Discover the Art of Autumn

Students in the After School Program found artistic inspiration in the Sacred Woods last week and made a beautiful mosaic from autumn leaves and acorns. After School Program teacher Cjet Raymond asked the children if they would like to collect a "rainbow-ful" of leaves, and the children scattered into the woods to collect autumn treasures. The result was this colorful piece of nature-art - a sculpture worthy of Andy Goldworthy!

From the Faculty Blogs

To learn about air and weather, Sue Delaney's MAG students made parachutes from paper napkins and string.

At their first "Author's Day" of the year, Amanda Diffley's third grader bravely stepped up to the mic (pictured).

Feeling sad on the playground? One Foote student imagined an app for that, while Head of Lower School Beth Mello blogs about a real-life place for finding friendship.

Head of Middle School John Turner blogs about what middle schoolers are learning off campus this fall.
