A Cultural Exchange - From China to Foote

Our visitors from Changsha, China departed today following an incredible week of learning and teaching together.

The students from Yali Middle School visited classrooms on Monday for a cultural exchange based on Foote's motto, "Gladly will I learn and gladly teach," in which students taught each other something from their respective country.

At an all-school assembly on Tuesday, Yali students performed kung fu and a traditional dance for Foote, while Foote students performed a choreographed dance to the song "Happy" that turned into a spontaneous, joyous dance party on the crowded stage. (Click here for video of that.)

Following that, Yali students and ninth grade buddies waded into the West River to collect fish and aquatic insects for a hands-on biology lesson.

Despite being rained out of apple picking, the students enjoyed many other cultural experiences together: a boat tour of the Thimble Islands, a visit to downtown New Haven, bowling and apple pie making.

Ninth graders bade farewell to their new friends today knowing they would meet again in March.
