Horizons at Foote: FAQs

This summer, Foote announced that we are adopting a new summer program for low-income New Haven public school students. Beginning next June, Foote will become an affiliate of the Horizons Student Enrichment Program, a national network of more than 40 summer programs aimed at reversing the "summer slide" that contributes to the student achievement gap.

Horizons at Foote will eventually offer students entering grades 1 through 9 a six-week, full-day program of literacy, math and confidence-building activities. Participants will also have the opportunity for swim lessons each afternoon at Albertus Magnus College.

We are thrilled about this opportunity to build on Foote's longstanding commitment to New Haven, and have prepared a list of frequently asked questions with information about what this means for Foote.

If you have questions, you may also contact Horizons at Foote's Executive Director, Jaime Cole, at 203-777-3464, or jcole@footeschool.org.

Materials Still Needed for Art

Pokeberries
As part of their study of Native Americans, MAG students will be dyeing wool using natural materials. Parents are asked to bring any of the following items to Jennifer Youngblood's art room:

  • Yellow onion skins (only the papery part)
  • Pokeberries in their juicy state (please freeze)
  • Fresh or frozen flower heads (marigolds and coreopsis)

Please sort items and bag each separately. Flowers and berries can be frozen in airtight plastic bags.

The Art Department is also looking for the following recycled materials, which can be dropped off in the art rooms or at the front desk:

  • Washed Styrofoam trays
  • Picture frames (11" x 14" or smaller)
  • Unwanted shoes
  • Gardening magazines or seed and flower catalogs
  • Old tennis balls (not chewed by dogs)

Rewards Programs to Support Foote
Stop & Shop Card Registration
It is time to register your Stop & Shop card to earn A+ School Rewards for Foote. Participation costs you nothing; it won't affect gas points, and your purchases are not seen by Foote. Last year the PTC earned over $3,000 through this program - money that went to field trips, summer reading books, and the beautiful new Lower School playground. Please take 30 seconds to make sure your card is signed up by clicking here. Look for the red box labeled "for customers." You can select The Foote School from the list of New Haven schools (alphabetized under "T" for "The Foote School"), or use our school ID number which is 08832. Every card helps, so please encourage family members to register their cards, too. Even Stop & Shop shoppers in other states can support Foote. Questions? Email the PTC's Stop & Shop Coordinator, Vicki Murphy, at vgmurphy1848@comcast.net. Thank you in advance for your support!

Earn Money for Foote at Target
If you have a Target credit card, you can register it with Target's Take Charge of Education program and Target will donate 1 percent of your purchases to Foote. This is win-win: you get 5 percent off your purchases by using the Target Card, and Foote gets Target's donation.  Click here to find out more.

Foote Helps in Coastal Clean-Up

Several members of the Foote community joined in the 2014 International Coastal Clean-Up last Saturday. Ninth graders Jared O'Hare and Zach Pine-Maher, student leaders of Environmental Action Group, organized a team of teachers, parents and students to help clean up Sandy Point Beach in West Haven.

The beach is an important bird sanctuary, one of the few remaining nesting sites along the shore for piping plovers, oystercatchers and terns. Trash, such as candy wrappers, attracts scavengers that eat plover eggs and chicks in the summer.

The Foote team was able to fill several large trash bags with cigarette butts, bottle caps and other litter. Also joining Foote's crew were parents Judy O'Hare and Mary Grey Maher; fourth grader Michael Cunningham; faculty members John Cunningham, Lara Anderson, Kim Birge-Liberman and Sally Nunnally; and Chinese guest teacher Li Hong.
