Welcome Back!
A Message from the Head of School

Dear Parents,

I am thrilled to welcome new and returning families to the start of the 2014-15 school year! For me, the first days of school are a special time, filled with anticipation and excitement for the learning and discoveries that await our students. This summer was a busy one at Foote, and you will notice some changes and improvements.

First is the new gym floor, named for Foote's longtime former athletic director Ted Willis. The floor will enhance physical education and interscholastic sports, and is a meaningful tribute to a friend and colleague who dedicated his career to The Foote School and its students.

Second is the new Lower School playground, which features a new and unique Luckey climber, a refurbishing of the existing climber, and a beautiful new playscape. The playground reflects our commitment to the importance of free, imaginative play - and I don't think you'll see another one quite like it!

As always, I invite you to stop by my office to chat, or make an appointment to see me anytime if you have something you would like to discuss.

Enjoy Labor Day weekend, and I look forward to greeting you all next week!

Warmly,

What I Learned Over Summer Vacation: Karla Matheny

As we kick off a new school year, Foote faculty share how their summers reflected the first part of the school motto, "Gladly will I learn and gladly teach." In this week's E-News, Art Department Chair Karla Matheny talks about her summer sabbatical - offered to Foote faculty with at least seven years at the school - on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana.

Karla spent two weeks in July living in a teepee and riding horses through the reservation's untamed landscape while learning about Blackfeet culture. Her riding partner was Tom Crawford, a Blackfoot Indian and medicine man who taught Karla to identify medicinal plants, to spot wildlife (they came within 30 yards of a grizzly bear) and about the tribe's belief system.

From her sabbatical, Karla brought back inspiration for the art room and for North Star, the Native American-themed program she cofounded to teach confidence-building skills to fifth graders.

Read more about Karla's adventure on our website.
