Summer Book Fair!

The Summer Book Fair will be held June 2 & 3 in the Perrine Library. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to view the terrific selection of titles chosen by Foote's librarians and to get a head start on purchasing summer reading for children.

Parent volunteers are still needed for set-up, bookselling and breakdown. Please click here to sign up for a shift.

Summer Reading!

A note from Head Librarian Lynda Johnson:

Starting today (May 29) during Library time, I am giving each child currently in grades K-5 the 'Summer Book' chosen by the teachers for them and you to read over the summer. If your child is entering grade 7, 8 or 9 in the fall, he or she will have a selection of books from which to choose. Either a Middle School Humanities teacher or I will have introduced the 'choice books' to your children. The 'choice books' will be available in paperback at the Book Fair next week.
  • Please be sure to look for an email from Foote about Summer Reading early next week. Each family will receive an email outlining the specific Summer Reading requirements for each grade.
  • Inside each 'Summer Book' will be a bookmark with the web address for the Summer Reading page of the Library's blog. There you will find updated lists of recommended books for each grade and two lists of suggested read alouds - one for younger children and one for middle grade students.
  • As I have been updating these lists over the last weeks, I realized that they can play an even bigger part in helping families with e-readers to find books that are a good fit for each child - without relying on the online booksellers, who frequently don't know much about the books they are selling. The books on the list are assigned to a grade more by appropriateness of content than by any specific reading level. Within a grade, independent reading levels and preferences vary greatly. Therefore, the list includes a wide choice of titles, so there's something for everyone.
Reminder: Forms Due May 30

Parents: please note that the gray Student/Parent Information Form and the Emergency Consent Form are due by Fri.., May 30. Extra forms are available on the Parents page of the Foote website and at the front desk.

Thank you!

May Day a Joyous Celebration of Spring

The rain held off long enough for a wonderful May Day celebration outside last Friday, May 23. A few rays of sunshine even broke through the clouds as students performed the Sleights Sword Dance, Rigs O' Marlowe, La Bastringue and the traditional third grade Maypole dance. Parents enjoyed the custom of joining their sons and daughters for the Virginia Reel, and seventh graders surprised everyone with a 'flash mob'-style dance to Pharrell Williams' hit song "Happy." Find a lot more photos on the gallery page of our website, and click below to watch video of the third grade Maypole dance.

90-Second Newbery Films

Fifth graders in Jim Adams' class have been busy making 90-Second Newbery films - short movies based on Newbery Award-winning books. For several years, Mr. Adams' students have made the movies and entered them in the "90-Second Newbery" contest organized by author James Kennedy. The rules are simple: Students must create a movie that sums up a book's plot in 90 seconds or less. Click below to watch an adaption of Karen Cushman's 1996 Newbery winner "The Midwife's Apprentice," and check out Mr. Adams' blog for all of the student videos.
