New Issue of Foote Prints

The spring issue of Foote Prints magazine is hot off the presses and packed with great photos and articles about the amazing things happening in the Foote community, as well as plenty of alumni news.

The focus of this issue is character education, and how Foote helps to shape children into moral and caring individuals with a passion for helping to make the world a better place.

The magazine should arrive in your mailbox this week. Meanwhile, you can get a sneak peak of this issue by clicking here.
Recycle Your Old Cell Phones for Amnesty
Foote's Amnesty International chapter is running a cell phone recycling drive. Recycling your old phones will raise money for Amnesty's human rights initiatives while keeping harmful e-waste out of landfills. Drop your old cell phones in boxes placed in the Kindergarten building, the main office and the Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology Building. Broken phones are okay, too!

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB TO PEOPLE?
If it's a child, I say I'm someone who talks about feelings. If it's parents, I tell them I work with teachers, parents and children to support kids in their school environment. Sometimes people hear 'social work' they think there has to be a serious problem. But sometimes there are just bumps in the road and it's that added, extra support that gets you through.

WHAT'S THE BEST PART ABOUT WORKING AT FOOTE?
Now that I've been here for some time, it's great to see how the kids have grown and matured. And it's wonderful to be here where my kids are.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
I didn't really know any of my grandparents. My dad came over on a boat; we're first generation. My grandparents, because they lived in India, I didn't have a strong connection to them. I would love to be able to go back in time and meet them, and see what they're like. I've heard amazing stories.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW?

"Law and Order: SVU." It's my guilty pleasure.

WHAT'S SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

My husband is in the military reserves. We got married at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs while picking flowers, right before my husband was being deployed. It was the opposite of a big, pretentious Hindu ceremony.

PEPE'S, SALLY'S OR MODERN?

Modern. With Pepe's coming in second.

Poet, Foote Parent Reads to Third Graders

Poet and Foote parent Joellen Adae, mother to Kwabena (grade 4) and Kwasi (grade 3), spoke to third graders on April 23 to share her poetry and talk with children about what it's like to be an author. She talked about the difference between limerick and haiku poems and read imaginative poems she wrote about the "five-second rule" and about accidentally sitting on someone's imaginary friend.
Seeing African Animals Up Close

Mixed Age Group students are studying Africa and had a close encounter with gorillas, giraffes, rhinoceros, lions, zebras, monkeys, flamingos and other African wildlife during a field trip to the Bronx Zoo on April 23. Find more photos on our Facebook page.

Celebrating Earth Day in the Garden

The rain held off on Earth Day, April 22, so MAG students spent part of the afternoon in the Foote garden, working on paths, weeding and planting flowers and vegetables for the summer growing season. The school's Earth Day Assembly will take place next Tues., April 29. Find more pictures on our Facebook page.

From the Faculty Blogs

Emily Buckley's MAG students got a special delivery from their African pen pals - and some new words to learn.

Third graders are studying Australia, and Amanda Diffley's students drew Australian landscapes and wrote haiku poems to go with them (pictured).

Fifth grade teacher Jim Adams posted a link to a classic cartoon movie his students watched to learn about math.

Which children's books will win the Bank Street Award and Cook Prize? As Librarian Jennifer Friedman notes, Foote students will have a say in deciding.
