MOSAIC Event: Ninth Graders Discuss Cross-Cultural Exchanges

Come hear ninth graders discuss their recent cross-cultural exchanges at MOSAIC's spring event on Wed., April 2. A panel of students and faculty will reflect on the China trip, volunteering with refugees in New Haven, and a diversity conference in Washington, D.C.
  • The program will run from 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. in the Perrine Library. (If there's a large crowd, the event will be moved to the Twichell Room). All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend, not just those of ninth graders.
RSVP to Carol Poling at cpoling@footeschool.org.

Recycle Your Old Cell Phones for Amnesty

Foote's Amnesty International chapter is running a cell phone recycling drive. Recycling your old phones will raise money for Amnesty's human rights initiatives while keeping harmful e-waste out of landfills. Drop your old cell phones in boxes placed in the Kindergarten building, the main office and the Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology Building. Broken phones are okay, too!

Maple Sugaring in the Foote Woods

The sap finally started running from sugar maples over March break, and students in the Vacation Program participated in an exciting day of syrup making with brothers Pete and Jay Cox. In all, the students boiled 110 gallons of sap into three gallons of extra dark amber syrup. Students enjoyed the sweet stuff with a pancake breakfast. A quart of Foote School syrup will go to the highest bidder at the Annual Fundraising Auction on April 26.

From Foote to China, and Back Again

Ninth graders had the learning experience of a lifetime on this year's China trip and will recount their experiences at next week's MOSAIC event. Trip leader Sheila Lavey says the ninth graders represented Foote proudly and graciously during the journey. Check out the China blog for great photos and diaries from each day of the trip.

Students Earn Kudos at Competitions

Springtime is a season of academic competitions, and Foote students have displayed smarts and sportsmanship at numerous forums over the past few weeks. Here's a roundup:

National Geographic Bee: After finishing first in Foote's annual competition, sixth grader Liam earned a chance to compete in the state championships on April 4 by finishing in the top 100 among Connecticut students who took a written geography test.

New Haven Chess Tournament: Thirteen students participated in a chess tournament for New Haven schools held at Hopkins School during the first week of spring break. The Foote team came in second place overall, earning a trophy. "The kids had a wonderful time, were encouraging and enjoyed the camaraderie with all their friends and other team players," reports parent Kiran Zaman.

MATHCOUNTS: Seven Foote students competed at the state finals of the national MATHCOUNTS problem-solving contest at the University of Hartford on March 8. Foote's four-member team placed 10th out of 27 teams. On the written test, eighth grader Jonah and sixth grader David finished 8th and 11th, respectively. In a final oral round, David finished in second place overall. The MATHCOUNTS club is new at Foote and participation this year was fantastic.

From the Faculty Blogs

Jess McNell's Kindergartners learned how much sap it takes to get just a little maple syrup during a stove-top boil.

Margy Lamere's MAG students found a clever way to measure the perimeter of their hands. (Pictured)

Amanda Diffley's third graders made a list of ways they can help make Foote a supportive place to learn and play.
