The annual Spring Fundraiser Auction is on April 26. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through the auction website. The evening will feature live and silent auctions, food and drink, and live entertainment by professional comedians Jon Fisch and Sherry Davey.

The PTC still needs parents to volunteer (sign up here), sponsor the event and donate items to the auction. Results of Our Mixed Age Group Review

Dear Parents,

Over the course of the past year, a review of the Mixed Age Group structure has been underway. Current and former faculty, parents and administrators have provided feedback about their experiences with the MAG structure. This review revealed clearly that there are aspects of Mixed Age Group that are highly valued by the Foote community as well as aspects that present challenges and opportunities for growth.

The most prominent reasons the Foote community values MAG include its leadership and character building opportunities, the strong sense of community it fosters, teacher/student relationships and the inherent respect for childhood development and varied rates of learning.

The review also revealed opportunities to enhance the children's experience in grades 1 and 2. These opportunities include more targeted differentiation, curricular clarity and alignment, and a richer social experience for the children.

This feedback, in conjunction with the school's commitment to continuous improvement, presents an opportunity for further discussion and action. As a result, a task force will be convened during the spring and summer of 2014 to address this feedback and plan for change. The task force will be comprised of one head teacher from each MAG building, an associate, two specialists, one Learning Support teacher and the Head of the Lower School. This group will ensure that the plan is in keeping with the Foote mission and philosophy and retains, where appropriate, those elements of Mixed Age Group that are most valued.

We are excited by the prospects of further refining the children's experience in grades 1 and 2, and we will keep families apprised as the process unfolds.

Sincerely,

Beth Mello
Head of Lower School

A Tale of Espionage, Romance and Murder

The ninth grade play, The 39 Steps, has been a big hit with audiences this week, playing to packed crowds in the Sandine Theater. Friday's show is sold out, but there are still a handful of tickets left for tonight's performance, which starts at 7 p.m. (Call the front desk for reservations, 203-777-3464.) Book Swapping in the Sturley Room

The annual Book Swap is underway in the Sturley Room, and there are hundreds of titles to choose from. Here's how it works: Students bring in books they've outgrown and exchange them for books they want to read. The book fair is open today until 4 p.m. (bring in AND pick out books), and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (pick out books only).

Eighth Graders Read Spanish Leyendas to MAG Students

On Feb. 20, eighth graders in Hayden Holt's honors Spanish class read leyendas (legends, or stories) they wrote to Angela Giannella's MAG students. "They were the perfect audience to hear about princesses, love, dragons, chocolates and battles," Ms. Holt says. The eighth graders worked in pairs to write and illustrate their own leyendas after discussing Mexican legends and the grammar and vocabulary that accompany them.

Recreating a Masterpiece, Square By Square

If you haven't been in the lobby of the main building recently, you're missing this incredible mural of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" created by ninth graders. Students recreated the masterpiece with Cray-Pas, section-by-section, with each student responsible for a square. The project tied into their art history study of the Renaissance, says art teacher Karla Matheny, and took just three class periods to complete. Pictured under the photo is the key to which student painted each section.
