A Message From the
Head of School

Dear Parents,

The holidays remind us of all we have to be thankful for, and of everything we have to celebrate here at Foote. Diversity is at the heart of the school's mission, and this year we are celebrating a number of events and milestones that deepen our commitment to cultural understanding.
  • This Wednesday, Dec. 4, four faculty members will travel to Washington D.C. to attend the NAIS People of Color Conference and Student Diversity Leadership Conference. For the first time, Foote is sending students on the trip - six ninth graders who were selected based on essays they wrote about why they wanted to attend the conference and what they thought they could bring back to our school community.
  • For Professional Development Day on Nov. 1, we welcomed Rosetta Lee, a diversity specialist and sixth grade teacher from Seattle Girls' School. Rosetta led a day of engaging and productive workshops for Foote faculty on how to have difficult conversations with students about race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and class.
  • On Jan. 16, MOSAIC will hold a talk in the Perrine Library titled "Divided Homelands, Unfriendly Homes: The Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947." Leading this discussion will be Dr. Fasih Q. Zaman, a Foote grandparent whose family journeyed from India to Pakistan after partition, and Steven Wilkinson, a Foote parent and professor of India and South Asian Studies at Yale.
Please join me in congratulating our student diversity leaders. I hope to see you on January 16 for what promises to be an enlightening discussion. You can read more about Foote's diversity efforts on our website.

Warmest wishes to you and your families during this holiday season.

Sincerely

History Comes Alive for Early America Day

Last Wednesday was Early America Day at Foote, when seventh graders dress as historical figures they have been studying. The students spent the morning visiting classrooms - in costume and in character - before presenting to an all-school Thanksgiving assembly. Among this year's early Americans were John Smith, Thomas Paine, George Washington, Deborah Sampson, Pocahontas, Noah Webster, Nathan Hale and Benedict Arnold (who was roundly booed by the crowd.) Click here for more photos. Click the still frames below for video of two songs from the assembly: MAG students singing "Over the River," and seventh graders singing "Amazing Grace."
