Upcoming Field Trips

Deer Lake
The fifth grade makes is annual trip to Deer Lake Scout Reservation in Killingworth, Wed., Oct. 16 through Fri., Oct. 18. The 253-acre reservation is a laboratory for students studying ecology and stewardship - and the night hike, campfire and other activities are a lot of fun. Click here for more information.

Bear Mountain
On Fri., Oct. 18, the sixth grade will hike Bear Mountain, Connecticut's highest peak (2,316 feet). The annual hike is a challenging, team-building adventure that relates to the journey theme in humanities and the life science course. Click here for more information.

9th Grade China Trip

The Yali delegation's visit was a big success! Thanks to everyone who helped make our visitors from China feel welcome. (For photo galleries, click here, here, here and here.)

Now it's time to think about the ninth grade China trip. In order to make travel arrangements, we need to know your family's decision and collect your son or daughter's current passport (valid through Sept. 15, 2014) by Thurs., Oct. 17.

Click here to download the "declaration of participation" form.

If you are having trouble reaching a decision or obtaining a passport in time, please contact Debra Riding right away at [email protected].

Diversity Leadership Workshop
On Oct. 21, Foote will host a diversity leadership workshop for interested eighth and ninth grade students presented by trainers from the Anti-Defamation League. The session builds on Foote's partnership with the ADL and promotes our efforts to foster respect and kindness through the values of Falco's PRIDE.

The session will run from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the Twichell Room. Students who wish to participate should reserve their place by completing the forms provided to them by their advisors earlier this week. Click here to download the form. Students who participate will be excused from practices and rehearsals, though the girls' soccer team has a home game that day.

Experiencing Early America at Plimoth Plantation

Seventh graders traveled back in time this week at Plimoth Plantation, an historical site in Plymouth, Mass., that recreates life as the Pilgrims lived it in 1627. The field trip kicks off the study of early American history in humanities class, which culminates with Early America Day on the day before Thanksgiving. At Plimoth, seventh graders toured the Mayflower 2 (a replica of the original ship), wandered through a replica English village (where they met Pilgrims in character) and visited the Wampanoag site (where they learned how Native Americans made a dugout canoes.) From the Faculty Blogs

Latin teacher Tina Hansen found a language lesson in the motto of a student's "Hogwarts Alumni" tee-shirt.

Margy Lamere's MAG students (pictured) are studying spiders (after reading "Charlotte's Web") and met a real-life spider-woman: Kelly Streeter, an engineer who climbs buildings to assess their structural integrity.

Adam Solomon posted video of his fifth graders singing and dancing to "Great Big House in New Orleans."

Head librarian Lynda Johnson blogs about a new study that confirms reading for pleasure improves student performance in school.

And Katy Botta's Kindergartners used Venn diagrams to find out who likes oranges and who likes cheese - and to learn what they had in common with a classmate.
