Chinese Visitors Arrive at Foote

Foote rolled out the welcome mat for our visitors from Yali Middle School in China, who arrived on campus Tuesday. The China students visited classrooms for a cultural exchange based on the Foote School motto, "Gladly will I learn, and gladly teach," in which students taught each other something from their respective homelands. Yali students learned about  football, Connect Four and Duck, Duck, Goose. Foote kids learned Chinese words, songs and a game similar to hacky sack called Jian Zi. Click here for more photos.

At an all-school assembly Wednesday, there was more exchanging - of gifts, poems and songs. Click here for more photos.
And on Wednesday afternoon, Yali students and their ninth grade buddies waded into the West River to collect fish and aquatic insects for study. Click here for more photos.

Foote Students Celebrate Arts Day

Regular classes took a break last Friday, Sept. 27, for Arts Day - a celebration of the visual, performing and musical arts. The recess field became a giant dance floor for zumba. A science classroom was used to experiment with "artistic sushi." The gym was filled with student-made architectural models for a whale observation station. And everywhere you looked, the woods were filled with fairy houses made by MAG students. The New Haven Independent covered Arts Day - and took a particular interest in a workshop called "Observational Chicken Drawing." Click here to read their story, and click here for more photos.

From the Faculty Blogs

Jim Adams' fifth graders learned to sing "Two Tigers" in Chinese from Yali student Li Kehui. See the videos here, here and here.

Third graders in Melissa McCormack's class are learning about force and motion by inventing vehicles with K'Nex building toys. Melissa's takeaway: "It is so important to provide children self-guided exploration time."

Physical Education teacher Eric Einbinder posted video of Chinese guest teacher Huang Qiong teaching students the stretches and exercises done at Yali.

And Sue Delaney's MAG students (pictured) tried eating with "bird beaks" to learn how cardinals, warblers, herons and hummingbirds get their food.
