Welcome Back!
A Message From the Head of School

I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to new and returning students and families for the 2013-14 school year. I hope you all had enjoyable summers full of family, friends, adventure and rest.

Tomorrow is Orientation Day, when the newest members of the Foote family will meet their teachers and student hosts. Next Tuesday, September 3, is the first day of school - one full of heart-warming reunions and palpable excitement. It's one of my favorite days of the year.

You may notice some changes around campus since June. The Middle School building has been renovated with new counters and cabinets, upgraded wireless internet, improved ventilation and central air-conditioning. The playground outside the Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology Building was completed. And the boys' and girls' bathrooms in the Common Unit underwent a well-deserved remodeling.

As always, I invite you to stop by my office to chat, or make an appointment to see me anytime you have something you would like to discuss.

Enjoy the Labor Day weekend, and I'll see all of you bright and early on Tuesday morning!

Sincerely,

Latin Teacher Drew Sweet Wins $2,000 Grant for "Hip-Hop Hexameter"

Latin Teacher Drew Sweet has won a $2,000 grant for "Hip-Hop Hexameter," a project he developed that teaches students Latin poetry by having them recite it over hip-hop beats made on GarageBand.

Drew was one of 100 teachers nationwide selected to receive an ING Unsung Hero grant, which honors educators across the country who work tirelessly to make a lifelong impact in the classroom for their students. More than 1,300 teachers applied. He will now compete with other winners for one of three top prizes: an additional $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 from ING U.S.

Drew will use the money to buy a new microphone, headphones and other recording equipment to produce better sound quality on recordings his 7th, 8th and 9th graders will make this year.

ING Branch Manager Michael F. Linehan, Sr. visited Foote on August 29 to present a check and plaque commemorating Drew's achievement.
