Festival of the World

The sixth grade's Festival of the World, the culmination of a yearlong project in which each student studies one country intensely, is taking place today in school at 2 p.m., with families invited at 4:30 p.m. to view the student projects.

Each student chooses the country he/she will study by spinning a globe and randomly placing a finger on a location. Final projects incorporate maps, biographies of famous residents, statistics, a 3-D model of topography or architecture, and in the evening presentation, foods from the various countries.

The students' work piques their interest in the area they have studied, to the extent that many often express an interest in visiting.

Student Diversity Leadership Conference a Success!

A large group of Foote School students, faculty and staff attended the CAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference Sun., April 21 at the Taft School. The day began with Foote's 20 students and 16 faculty and staff members singing the national anthem with the 400-plus participants of the conference in tribute to those who were directly affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. It ended just as compellingly, when students from each age level shared work and ideas from the 11 breakout sessions. Sessions focused on stereotyping, racial diversity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and many other topics. One middle school student was a superb ambassador for Foote as he reported eloquently on his breakout session.

"The conference provides an opportunity for kids to use their voices and be heard, and empowers and excites them to return to their environment and make a change," says Foote school counselor Veena Raghuvir, a conference attendee. "There's always room for growth."

An Illuminating MOSAIC Event

Current and former Foote community members enjoyed an informative and moving evening Tues., April 23, in the Perrine Library. Amaar Al-Hayder, parent of a Foote MAG student, and Carine Sakr and Louis Chaptini, parents of a Foote kindergarten student, shared their personal journey stories from their homelands in Iraq and Lebanon, respectively.

Following a question-and-answer session, all who attended left feeling that they had been introduced in a meaningful way to the Arabic cultures represented as well as to the similarities and differences with American culture.

MOSAIC strives to promote an understanding of cultures and to celebrate the richness and diversity that each and every one embodies.  That mission was clearly accomplished thanks to Amaar, Carine and Louis.

Read About Foote's Reaccreditation Process

Foote was reaccredited this year by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). Reaccreditation is a rigorous process that began at Foote with a comprehensive self-study. A Visiting Committee from CAIS then spent three days at Foote in October as part of the process. The result was a highly complimentary CAIS report on Foote's approach to education.

Please visit http://www.footeschool.org/about/accreditation.shtml for information regarding the process and the outcome.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE

Night Rainbow

Site Projects New Haven's Night Rainbow is lighting up the skies this week, and Foote is planning a community gathering at 7:15 p.m. Fri., April 26, with a Night Rainbow viewing at 8 p.m. on the new field. A few notes on the evening:
  • The community is invited to attend an interdisciplinary art show at 7:15
p.m., which will include a bake sale on the patio outside John Cunningham's science room. We ask that visitors enter through the door of the main building, proceed through the hallway, and exit out John's room. Visitors may follow the rainbows on the sidewalk toward the field.
  • Remember to bring a flashlight!

Below, kindergartners plant a rainbow garden outside the kindergarten rooms as part of schoolwide interdisciplinary efforts around Night Rainbow. Kindergartners also read the book, "Planting a Rainbow," by Lois Ehlert.
