"Peter Pan" a Huge Hit with Audiences
| | |
Foote's seventh and eighth grade production of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan," directed by Julian Schlusberg, was a tremendous success. Even with an added matinee performance, the Sandine Theater was sold out for each show! The in-school performances allowed kindergartners through ninth graders to enjoy the delights of Peter Pan, Captain Hook and the Darling family. To view and order photos, please visit: www.sendtoprint.net (Event ID: PeterPanA or PeterPanB).

Annual Fund - Be a part of the 100 percent
| |
Thank you to the many families who have already donated to Foote's Annual Fund. We're at a record pace toward 100 percent parent participation. Our Annual Fund class captains have connected with many parents throughout the fall. If you haven't given yet, making your gift here will save our volunteers a call after winter vacation! Questions? Please contact Annual Fund Chair Glenn Levin or Director of Development Ann Baker Pepe.

Foote's Dawn Walsh Highlighted in Article
| | |
After School Program Director Dawn Walsh was one of six experts consulted for a recent article focusing on dynamic after-school programs in independent schools. The writers of the article, which appeared in the fall 2012 issue of Independent School magazine, researched 100 after-school programs but selected just a few to feature, including Foote's.
The After School Program is a central element of Foote's program, essential to many Foote families. Dawn, who has been at Foote since 1992, is widely appreciated by students, parents and teachers because of her warm and friendly approach, her commitment to supporting families, and her wisdom about children's development. She also directs the school's Vacation and Summer Programs.

Plans Underway for New 'Big Toy'
| | |
Students in grades 4-9 are looking forward to a new "Big Toy." This fall we consulted students, teachers, and PTC members; their input will help determine the components and placement of the new playground on the Middle School recess field. We have met with playground experts to determine the best design and location. We can't offer a definite timeline because much depends on the design selected and the time required for construction and installation, but we intend to have the new equipment in place by the end of the school year.
This will be an important investment and - as with the new building - we are determined to get it right! Happily, there is lots of green space to run around and play and students in grades 4 and 5 are enjoying time on the Lower School playground.

Groceries for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen
| | |
Sixth grade students collected groceries from each grade to help fill the shelves at St. Ann's Soup Kitchen, which serves more than 4,000 meals every month to those in need. They gathered the food, tracked what had been gathered, carted it to the van and stacked it for delivery to St. Ann's. Many thanks to all the families that participated.

Donations for Hurricane Sandy Victims
| | |
Foote is still organizing a school-wide effort to aid hurricane victims through a donation to the American Red Cross. A nonpartisan organization, the American Red Cross was a first responder to the hurricane and continues to provide food, water, shelter, medical supplies, and other recovery items to those hardest hit.
We are asking each Foote family to donate $1, or more if you wish. We would like the students to get involved by performing a chore at home to support the family's donation. Those chores may be written on a leaf that the student may then hang on the Sandy Relief tree by the Front Desk. The Sandy Relief Drive will end on Mon., Dec. 17.

12-12-12: A Special Buddy Lunch
| |
Students gathered with their respective grade buddies on Wed., Dec. 12 (12/12/12!) for lunch and lively conversation in the Hosley Gym. There was a 12-second countdown to 12:12 p.m., and a PowerPoint presentation displayed cool facts about the number 12. To top it off, students were all provided a special snack: Fruit by the Foot(e)! The Music of Native America
| | |
Native American music connected closely to the rhythms of the Earth, and on Mon., Dec. 10, MAG student Justin Zlabys's mother, Yaira Matyakubova, a violinist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and member of the Haven String Quartet, demonstrated those harmonies to Sue Delaney's MAG class.
Students closed their eyes and imagined themselves in Connecticut hundreds of years earlier as they listened to music created by Native Americans.
