A School-Wide Effort to Help the Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Dear Foote families,

The food drive for St. Ann's Soup Kitchen is now underway, and we want to thank you for the food that you have generously contributed to help local families make healthy meals. In mid-December our school will deliver hundreds of bags of groceries to St. Ann's.  Thank you!

Over the last month, many Foote families, faculty, and staff have expressed the desire to help those people who are still struggling with the aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy. Before we leave for our winter break, the Foote community will come together in one more school-wide effort to aid hurricane victims through a donation to the American Red Cross. A nonpartisan organization, the American Red Cross was a first responder to the hurricane and continues to provide food, water, shelter, medical supplies, and other recovery items to those hardest hit.  We are asking each Foote family to donate $1, or more if you wish. We would like the students to get involved by performing a chore at home to support the family's donation. The Sandy Relief Drive will take place from Mon., Dec. 10, to Mon., Dec. 17

I am so grateful to be part of a community that comes together quickly and generously when people need help. Thank you, and I wish you a happy, healthy holiday.

Warm regards,

Carol Maoz

Head of School

ATHLETICS

Swim Suit Fitting Information

Dear Foote School Swim Team Parents/Guardians,

On Thurs., Dec. 13, Metro Swim Shop will be at Foote to do fittings for team swimsuits. If your child's suit from last year fits and is in good shape, you are welcome to use it.

  • New swimmers or swimmers in need of new suits must bring the order form - filled out - to the fitting along with a check for the correct amount made out to Metro Swim Shop. (Please note that Foote will again this year subsidize the cost of one suit, making these a great value. That information is included in the order form. If you opt to purchase a second suit, it's at full cost.)
  • You also have the option to purchase Foote swimming sweatpants; however, the school does not underwrite the cost of these.

Metro Swim will arrive at 2:15 p.m.; swimmers should go to the Hosley Gym immediately after they check in at study hall.

Download the order form here.

Thank you in advance,

Sheila Lavey and Carole Lupi, coaches

Ted Willis, athletic director

Reliving Ellis Island

On Tues., Dec. 4, fourth graders donned period costume and stepped into character for an Immigration Simulation. They filled the roles of hopeful immigrants, along with Ellis Island personnel that included immigration processors and workers responsible for handling appeals. Once the exercise began, the actors were asked to speak in their characters' native languages (or at least not in English) to add to an atmosphere of authenticity.

An Olympian and Alumna Visits Foote

Caitlin Cahow '00, who won a silver medal for ice hockey in the 2001 Olympics and a bronze in the 2006 Olympics, visited classes at Foote Fri., Nov. 30.

"When you find something you really love to do, dedication and hard work will allow you to do it," she told students in Amanda Diffley's third grade class. Amanda was Caitlin's teacher in 1994, when Caitlin was nine years old and already a masterful hockey player. After playing for Harvard, Caitlin joined the Boston Blades, the only U.S. professional women's hockey team. The team plays in a Canadian hockey league. "I've been given so many opportunities - Foote, Harvard, the Olympics - and  I would certainly not have gotten to where I am without people supporting me and telling me I could achieve my goals," she told the students.

Caitlin, who has been attending Boston College Law School but is on leave to train for the 2014 Olympics, visited Foote with close friend and Blades teammate Kate Buesser, who also played with Caitlin at Harvard. "Every time I come back there's a new building!" Caitlin exclaimed when she saw the Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology Building. "I'm so grateful for this building in particular; Jon Milikowsky was a friend of mine. It's pretty fantastic to see his life commemorated in such a big way."
