Issue No. 01.15
January 2015

Happy New Year from the staff of the High Point Theatre......do we have some fun planned for you!

January kicks off with funny man James Gregory on 1/17.  His downhome humor will surely tickle your funny bone.  An amazing young group of musicians are up next as Black Violin hits the stage with their mixture of classical and urban music on 1/24.  Nnenna Freelon's 'Clothesline Muse' on 1/29 is a project that looks at how we communicate, tell stories and share our experiences. Clothesline Muse features music, dance, spoken word and mixed media.  If film is your forte, check out the screening of 'Hank vs. the Undead' by local film maker Dan Sellers on 1/31.  January truly has something for everyone!

Moving along to February we have several opportunities to find great entertainment.  Feb. 6 brings Shawn Hopper, an amazing guitar player and storyteller. Imago Theatre brings their production of Frogz to us for a 7pm show on Tuesday, Feb. 10.  Frogz is fun for the whole family!  It's a special treat on Valentine's Day when Mandy Barnett brings her smoky voice to a romantic evening.  Opening for Mandy will be local favorite Michael Cosner.  Be sure to get your reservations for the optional dinner in the main art gallery prior to the show .

Broadway comes to the HPT stage on February 21 for two performances of "The Color Purple".  This award winning show is produced with permission by Oprah Winfrey and features a remarkable cast telling the timeless tale based on Alice Walker's classic book.

Just a reminder, if you live in High Point we offer discounts on HPT/Passport events just by giving us your zip code.  Most discounts are around $5 per ticket.  This is not available on-line, only by phone or at the box office.

2015 Season Banner
To shake you out of our post-holiday, deep winter doldrums, the Theatre kicks off the New Year on Saturday, January 17, with Atlanta's funny-man James Gregory. Using home spun comedy, common sense wisdom, old fashioned values and politically incorrect humor, this Triad favorite will share his rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch. On January 24, we switch gears as the fresh new duo of Wil B and Kev Marcus - Black Violin - play a groundbreaking blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, pop and R&B. Closing out the month is Nnenna Freelon's multi-discipline theater project, The Clothesline Muse. Examining the clothesline as a community lifeline for African-American women, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon and 6 dancers celebrate the history of domestic workers and washwomen by

transforming their simple task of washing clothes by hand into stunning imagery, dance and song on Thursday, January 29.

February is synonymous for love and you will surely love guitar phenom Shaun Hopper. Stirring his audience, song by song, night after night, this Martin Guitar musician artfully merges a full range of genres with his one-of-a-kind percussive style, throwing in humorous tales from a small town Georgia upbringing, just for good measure, to captivate everyone within earshot. Just think Leo Kotke meets Guy Clark...Shaun Hopper coming Friday, February 6.

In celebration of Valentine's Day on Saturday, February 14, it's an evening with Mandy Barnett for "A Night of Romance." Celebrated for her portrayal of Patsy Cline in the Ryman Auditorium's production of "Always... Patsy Cline," Mandy shows her deep love and appreciation of all that is classic country. An optional dinner package will also be available before the show to provide for the ultimate romantic evening with your beloved!

Closing out the season on Saturday, March 14, Peter Yarrow of the legendary folk-pop trio Peter, Paul and Mary brings the folk renaissance of the 1960's back into our collective hearts with "A Night of Conversation & Song." Peter's gift for songwriting produced some of the group's most beloved songs ever recorded, including "Puff, The Magic Dragon," "Day is Done" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane."

Frogz

Performed in China, Europe and at some of North America's most revered festivals, this madcap revue of illusion, comedy and fun has inspired audiences worldwide.

Oprah Winfrey's Color Purple - February 21

This musical adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Color Purple - Feb 2015Prize-winning novel, and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film, spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.
